Shooting HD in 24p or 24p advanced
I plan on shooting a documentary in HD at 720p and was told that the best way to downconvert to SD is to shoot in 24p advanced and then edit in a 24frame timeline on FCP and output to 29.97 at the end. I’m shooting HD for archival purposes using a Panasonic HDX900 on DVC Pro. I’ll be transfering the files at the same time to a firestore. It will then be transfered to my portable G-Drive for import to my editor’s system. The main use of this project right now will be in SD. In the edit I’ll be using sources that were shot in 24p 4×3 and 1080i 24p. I’ll also be doing a green screen key, using 29.97 sources as backgrounds at times. I want to get the best SD quality possible out of the HD. My question is: Will it be worth it quality wise to shoot in 24p advanced and deal with stripping out the pulldowns in cinema tools for the 24frame timeline or should I just stick with straight 24p. Will 24p advanced be worth the hassel? The project will run about 7-8 minutes.

There are only 2 big reasons to go with actual 23.98 fps files.
1) You plan on eventually putting this project onto film. It doesn’t sound like this is something you’ll be doing.
2) You have a very long project that’s either going on DVD or the web and the space savings of losing those extra frames will make a difference in storage space. For an 8 minute proect, this reason means nothing to you either.
So for you, it seems that sticking with 29.97 files is going to be easier without any downside.
At any rate, it’s a good idea to always test out your workflow ahead of time anyway. Take samples of the different types of footage you plan on combining and acutally combine them and make a DVD from that. Make sure everything works the way you expect and that the system has no problems and creates a nice looking DVD. Best to discover any problems ahead of time.

That’s odd advice, as SD is 29.97…so editing 23.98 is pointless. If your delivery is to be SD 29.97, than shoot 29.97 and edit 29.97. 23.98 is for film out and HD delivery.

Stick with straight 24p…29.97.
