    Is there a compelling reason to make the leap to 10.5 yet?

    My system is a Quad G5, 4gb Ram 10.4.11 running mainly FCS2, Shake, AEcs3.

    in the words of that well known song…”should i stay or should i go?”

    Unless you’re having issues, not really, though some folks in the Color forum claim up to 40% faster renders in that app over Tiger. I’m just starting to test out Leopard, though I’m definitely not seeing that kind of dramatic speeds in Color renders. I am seeing an issue with the Auto Save in that app though, but that’s in the Color forum.

    The only big things I notice is that the system starts up / shuts down faster, applications open a bit faster, but other than that, about the same as Tiger.

    I would highly suggest you do what I did and install a brand new hard drive in your system and use that as your Leopard install. My entire Tiger system is sitting on its own drive and I can simply switch back and forth as needed in case anything goes horribly wrong on Leopard.

    [walter biscardi] ” install a brand new hard drive in your system and use that as your Leopard install. “
    That’s the bes suggestion.
    Just to add, I’m really happy of how Leopard and FCS2 works toguether, both in my G5 and my MBP.
    Just a stupid problem: In the Intel Mac can not live toguether in the same HD FC and Shake or AE. If they are together, you can not render in 10b in those applications.. This is like that since moths and don’t seems to bother nobody.

    ..and always a big mess on top of the table.

    Will it gain you anything? No. Absolutely not. The good news is that if you get a new system that HAS to have Leopard on it (like a new Mac Pro) it behaves fine. Motion is still pretty unstable, but then it always was..

    * Quick-Look
    * Time Machine
    * GREATLY improved Finder stability when dealing with networked drives
    * Built-in Screen sharing (+ ‘Back to my Mac’)

    Forget Apple’s “300 Features” advertising. Just listing these 4 items is enough to make me very, very happy.

    That doesn’t mean he should upgrade. A stable system is worth its weight in gold. Messing with that isn’t always the best choice, so I’m not saying he SHOULD upgrade.

    But saying there’s no gain whatsoever is the same as saying Final Cut 4.0 and 6.0 are the same thing. It’s just not true.

    What will it gain you in Studio 2? Not a whole lot. Only Time Machine is worth anything in terms of backup and even that is not enough to make me advise jumping in.

    If you have the time to make the change, then do it. But if you have a stable system with no reason to take the plunge, there’s nothing earth shattering in Leopard right now to make the change.

    WHAT!! – no 10bit uncompressed rendering? Well that is enough for me to avoid it like the plague. All my work is done in that format, using all three of those apps.

    thanks for the advice chaps.

    My only point is that it wasn’t accurate for him to say that there are no gains whatsoever from Tiger to Leopard.

    We can all have our own opinions on how to best act on the facts, but I think that the COW should be a place where the facts themselves are accurate.

    Saying that 2 pieces of software are the same when they aren’t doesn’t help the original poster. I also tend to think that sticking with Tiger is good advice. But that’s advice given alongside accurate information, which Adam can then use to make his own choices with.

    When you consider that this is the Final Cut Pro Forum, we are not discussing Leopard in general. We are discussing whether leopard is worth the effort for FCP and what will be gained.

    In those terms, really nothing at all to be gained.

    [adam taylor] “WHAT!! – no 10bit uncompressed rendering?”

    Yeah, I am not so sure about this. I don’t have Shake, but do have Ae and FCP.

    I am able to get 10 bit rendering out of both of those apps on Leopard.

    What do you mean by this Rafael?

    Also, another reason to switch to Leopard is that Compressor seems to be a bit more in tune with itself, I don’t have real hard evidence except some encoding experiences. Another reason to switch is that almost everything is getting developed for Leopard these days. I am in the process of changing all our computers over to Leopard.

    And Jeff, I agree with you, three of those four reasons are pretty damn good. Time Machine is not something I will play with, but hey I could see why people would.

    Not only no Apple 10b Unc but any other 10b codec. I tried with Sheer and I think remember even Proress HD. No 16b rendering. Output a cloud of animated colored noise on top of a white. In the G5 no problem at all.
    Now I have installed Shake and AE in another HD. Not big problem for me.
    For me is more important that FC, Compressor and Color works well. and they do.
