UVW-1800 shuts off on edit to tape
Been having this odd issue once every couple of weeks
with a Sony BetaSP UVW-1800.I put the tape in, go to edit to tape and when
the motor engages the unit shuts off.I have to then unplug the power chord and let
it sit for a few minutes before it will come
back on again.Anyone had this issue?

That’s a Sony issue. Take that machine in to a repair shop as soon as you can.

have you had that happen on an 1800 walter?
just curious to know if its a common problem.
but yeah its going in for service anyway.

Nope. My 1800 is almost 8 years old now and all we do is take it in every so often for head cleanings. It’s a very reliable workhorse for us.
That’s why I think it’s a Sony issue. Probably a bad sensor in there or something.

yeah we’ve had this one for just over 9 along with
another one that has 3x as many hours.Great little decks 🙂

We have one here that does the exact same thing. The power supply went flakey. Like yours, happens when tape transport locks in. Power just cuts out.

I’ve had this problem with 3 different UVW-1800’s and it always manifests in the same way.. My question to you is, did you turn the deck on after FCP had initialized? I noticed a while back that these UVW-1800s all turned off, then could not be turned on for a few minutes ONLY when deck control was activated after a late turn-on.
I had this problem with AVID and FCP on different systems.. I assumed it was some sort of overload protection for the serial port.. My current deck is an 1800 and has done this since I’ve had it.. Last 1800 and a colleague’s reliably do the same thing.. (when turned on after “capture tool” is open in Avid, or after FCP/Aja initializes)
So the million dollar question is– when did you turn your deck on?

Its a good idea to turn on your deck before you even start your computer If not, at least before you open log and capture. FCP wants to see a deck out there (on the RS422 line) when it opens the log and capture window. Because you are doing it after you open L and C, it may be corrupting the drivers

Just before making the dubs around 11am.
the fcp system had been on since 9am.
another lovely but rare issue with my DVW-500 digibeta is that
sometimes, after an insert/assemble to tape, the
mac has a kernel panic…..but thats a software
issue with the multibridge extreme. -

oh I definitely turn it on before I open log and capture,
but the deck stays off all day unless I’m going to use
it. No sense wasting electricity and my other 1800
does not have this problem.I suspect its the power supply like someone else mentioned.
