Sony EX1 and FCP 5: confirm incompatibility
I’ve done some research on these forums and seem to conclude that if I’m still running FCP 5 and I’ve got a Sony EX1, I won’t be able to work with the footage unless I have a capture device like from AJA or Blackmagic. Is this correct? Or is there a relatively simple work around?

Yes, upgrade to FCP 6.x. Then you can simply import the files using the Sony transfer application.

You don’t need FC 6.
You can use the Sony Transfer software as a stand alone application to capture the EX-1 footage. Then just import to FC.

I’m waiting for an extra $1300. I don’t have enough revenue to go and buy new software every time there is a release. My FCP 5 is a student version and to upgrade, I need the buy a regular license.

Just so this is out there… the academic license is for learning, not making money. You can’t update the academic version, and you also can’t legally use it on paying jobs. I bit the bullet after I got out of school and bought a full retail version of FCS. I probably paid for it twice by the time I paid off that credit card (not wise), but I was on the up and up and can go get the cheaper upgrades from here on out.
The release notes for FCP 6.0.2 list XDCAM EX support as a new feature, so there’s your answer.
FCP 5 might play back EX1 footage shot in the SQ codec and transferred with Sony’s software because his footage is essentially HDV, but I can’t remember if this footage appears as HDV or as XDCAM in the browser.

I’ve got a question. I just bought the ex-1 and upgraded to FCP 6.1. My computer is a dual 2.5 gig G5. I bought a macbook pro to transfer with the footage from the express card to FCP with the Sony XDcam Transfer software on the laptop. Once I have the footage in FCP on the laptop, I thought I could just drag the QT files from the laptop to my G5 but they don’t play. The audio is there and the Video is just black. I can transfer files recorded at SQ just not HQ. Am I doing something wrong or will these files not play on my G5. If I need to get an Intel tower I’m gonna be pissed.
