XDCam HD Import-2 questions
My day for questions today…
I’m importing XDCam HD footage today. In the past I’ve simply brought it in off of the deck using the traditional Log & Capture method as DVCHD material. I have three disks worth of material that I’m bringing in through the Sony Import method. It’s working well except that I can’t seem to view the footage in the Sony Import window. I’d like to look at each clip and add a description/clip name before importing it. When I look at the video in the Import logging window is “garbled”. The audio is fine but the video is not. If I go ahead and import the clips they look fine in Final Cut and work OK. I’d just like to rename the clips before import. Any ideas why I can’t view the clips in the Sony app?
Also, is there a way to get the Sony App. to import the clips into a specific bin within Final Cut? Rather than working in the traditional way and importing the clips to the logging bin, it just brings the clips into the main project window. Not a big deal. I can just create a bin and drag the clips into it. It’s a bit inconvenient though when I can’t log the clips before importing them. If I import three discs worth of clips there will be duplicate clip names since the shooter has the camera set to start every new disk with “C0001” for the clip name. Three disks will yield three clips with the same name. The project was shot at 23.98 by the way. He also shot one of the disks at 25mbs and the other two at 35mbs. Grrrrr…..
FCP 5.1.4, G5Quad, OS 10.4.10 Sony PDW-F70*In looking at the Image view in the Sony Transfer utility, I just noticed…in very, very small type in the Proxy view that it says that “Quicktime and a decompresser are needed to view the image”. I’m wondering, do I need a Quicktime plug or codec from Sony to view these Proxys? Wouldn’t it install this along with the Sony Transfer Application?

Hi Tom,
I found the easier way just to use the “Sony Transfer’ as stand alone.I download the clips where I want and then I just drag them to the FC browser.
I really don’t see the utility of the “Clip browser” , at least for my workflow. I don’t have it even installed.
Another thing I’m doing is to put a bunch of clips together and make a “big clip’ (with dual mono audio). Then I work with clips o about 8-10 minutes. I’m unable to work with hundreds of small clips in my browser. It make me feel that I’m working with iMovie.Mac OX 10.5.2-FC 6.02-QT 7.4.1

Thanks Rafael. I can deal OK with the clip management within the project. It’s not a big deal, just a little bump in the road.
I am, however, stopped dead in the road over how to get the proxys to show up and be viewable while working within the Transfer application. I know that this has worked in the past. I haven’t transferred into the computer via Firewire for almost a year or so, but I know it used to work?!
I can’t view the proxys in Quicktime viewer either. Still getting the same “garbled” noise that I see in the Transfer application. Probably just some stupid “got-cha” somewhere. Or a missing Quicktime component.
At least the High resolution clips work all right. Everything transferred into the computer without a hitch. I changed reel numbers from within Final Cut to at least differentiate between the three disks for this project.
Still looking for the problem…glad it’s Friday.

Hmmm…
Might have a good point. I did upgrade the Sony transfer software to import clips from a demo Sony EX1. (It didn’t work either). Maybe with this older machine/software combo I upgraded past what it could handle. I’ll check if I still have the original ZIP file for the older version of the transfer software. If so, I’ll uninstall the newer version and try loading up the previous version and see what happens.

Hey Tom,
Fwiw XDT2.5.1 is working fine here with FCP5.1.4, 10.4.11 on all our Intel Mac’s.
If it helps, although you cannot currently see the proxies (which would seem to be an issue with your QT install) you can “name” the discs with the XDT app in the Info tab at lower right … that disc name will carry over as a Reel ID to FCP when you import your clips, saving you from having to assign a Reel ID within FCP itself.

I did name the disks from the transfer program and it worked fine, bring in the names as reel numbers.
I’m running the transfer utility on an older G5 IBM machine. Don’t know it this would be the reason or not. I should still have the compressed files for the older transfer utility at work. I’ll try reloading this rather than the current version. It dod work last time I used it a few months ago.
I ended up recapturing the clips as DVCPro HD thru the Kona board on Friday. I found out that I will be needing to mix some upconverted SD materials into these videos along with the XDCam clips. I simply took the XDCam media offline and used the info from the imported clips to batch digitize thru the Kona. Worked like a charm although it did detect a couple of timecode breaks. No big deal. I’ll follow up on this issue a little later in the week once these edit sessions are over.
