I also had similar problems yesterday. I was also using sequences that had subtitles that had semi-transparent black backgrounds. I did not get render error pop ups, I got crappy renderings on 30 second sequences. Flash frames, freezes, wrong dissolves.

I rebooted and and took out the black BGs and then it worked okay.

Thanks Gary. Are you running FCP 6.0.2 and QT 7.4.1?

    Hi Walter,
That reminds me the strange things that Boris CC3 used to do in preview. Thanks God render were OK.
Just to point something, could this be related with the “optical flow” caches?

..and always a big mess on top of the table.

    Walter,

I’m not having that exact same problem, but I am having a related issue. This is a 1 month old 8-core, so it had Leopard on it when it came. It has been upgraded to 10.5.2 and has QT 7.4.1.

The problem I have is that if I try to render out something longer, say a 28 minute sequence, it makes it around 1/2-3/4 of the way, then FCP unexpectedly quits. If I render it a third at a time, there is no problem. I can always tell when it is going to happen as the progress bar stops moving… then several minutes later, boom… FCP is gone.

This was not happening initially, so it is something recent… either QT 7.4.1 or one of the more recent patches to Pro Apps, security etc. I’ve zapped the pram, rebuilt permissions, etc.– all to no avail.

This machine has 10GBs of ram (and a Kona 3), so naturally it’s frustrating that the G5 running Tiger and 5 gb’s of ram (Kona LH) doesn’t have this issue…

    Walter,

I haven’t had this exact issue, but I’ve had a lot of crashes while trying to render anything in the timeline that isn’t just video (namely Motion projects*). As a workaround for now, maybe you could build your lower 3rds in Motion and export as Animation. It adds a step along with double-rendering the same graphic, but it works whereas the “right way” doesn’t at the moment.

    * – O.T. Is anyone else’s machine incapable of rendering / exporting Motion projects which include text in anything other than Motion? FCP and Compressor both hang and eventually crash on my machine. I’ve submitted a bug report ( I submit lots of Motion bug reports), but you never know if they’re going to do anything about it until an update comes out.

I too have one of the new MacPros…also about a month old. OS 10.5.2, QT 7.4.1, FCP 6.0.2…basically everything updated fully. 4GB RAM, x1900XT GFX card. I haven’t had any render issues yet, but I haven’t done any heavy rendering either…still in “offline” rough cut phase. Although I have had to render a few things…but no issues at all yet.

Mitch, I have everything updated (Leopard, Qt, FC) and no one of those issues.
Are you running DiskWarrior or TechTools?
I’ve been using DiskWarrior to keep the System fit, but I just have experienced that even my eSATA HDs run much faster when the directories are clean. Just run the AJA System test and see the difference.

    Shane:

I have no problems with short renders… even 10 minutes worth. It’s 28 minutes that brings it on. This sequence has a lot of green screen and I’m using a number of Livetype backgrounds on the keys, so that may be the issue. A week ago I had zero problems rendering 52 minutes of HDcam footage, but it had no keying and no LT backgrounds.

    Raphael:

Not running DiskWarrior or TechTools. Perhaps I’ll give that a try.

    Zak:

I’m using Livetype backgrounds, but not Motion. My issue sounds a lot like yours… the fact that some else is having issues with transparent black backgrounds, and you are experiencing issues with Motion, makes me suspect it may be related to the LT backgrounds…

Nope, that’s not something we really want to do and the issue does not just happen on Lower Thirds anyway, it even happens on dissolves and other renders.

Really crazy situation and I’m trying to find the common denominator on everyone’s system that is doing this. So far it seems to be QT 7.4.1.

Fair enough… I’ve been staying away from QT 7.4.1 and sticking with 7.4, so maybe that’s why I’m not having the issue. FWIW, I also have a DeckLink HD Extreme rather than a Kona.

That said, FCP 5 (don’t want to spring for the upgrade for my occasional home use) is running just fine on my new iMac at home, and I install every update that pops up on that guy (except the occasional iApp update for the several I never use). So go figure.
