  • Can final cut???

Hello. Im an avid user forced to use final cut for a job because Avid as yet will not run of Leopard 🙁

I am desperate to know a few basic things that I loved to use in avid and am wondering if final cut can do the same.

Can I cut a hole in a layer of video to see the layer below it, can I track that hole? (equivelent animatte and tracker in Avid).

Can I use basic Picture in Picture effects and keyframe their size position e.t.c.

Can I keyframe motion, zoom etc… can I key frame everything???

Can final cut do a decent Chroma and Luma key?

I would really apprectiate the help on this, I know you may say I can do these things in motion, but if final cut can do this I would perfer that.

There are garbage mattes that you can use to cut holes in the effects tabs, but they don’t track. They can be keyframed. Motion can do tracking.

    >Can I use basic Picture in Picture effects and keyframe their >size position e.t.c.

I’m fairly sure this can be done with video layers and you can keyframe the motion parameters for each clip.

The motion tab in the viewer window lets you keyframe:
scale, rotation, center, anchor point, crop, distort, opacity, drop shadow and time remapping.

Can be a pain if you are doing lots of keyframing, but you can do it.

[Conan Stott] “Hello. Im an avid user forced to use final cut for a job because Avid as yet will not run of Leopard :-(“

Is this on a client machine or your own? If it’s your own, why not continue running Tiger? We’re still running Tiger on all three of our FCP edit workstations because there is zero to be gained in FCP by going to Leopard.

[Conan Stott] “Can I cut a hole in a layer of video to see the layer below it, can I track that hole? (equivelent animatte and tracker in Avid).”

There is no tracking native in FCP. You can create the hole using shapes and keys, garbage mattes, etc…. Then you can keyframe the movement.

[Conan Stott] “Can I use basic Picture in Picture effects and keyframe their size position e.t.c.”

Yes very easily using the Motion control tabs.

[Conan Stott] “Can I keyframe motion, zoom etc… can I key frame everything???”

    Yes.

[Conan Stott] “Can final cut do a decent Chroma and Luma key?”

You can do an excellent chroma key depending on the format of the original footage and how well it was shot.

[Conan Stott] “I would really apprectiate the help on this, I know you may say I can do these things in motion, but if final cut can do this I would perfer that.”

The biggest issue is you obviously don’t know how to use FCP yet as these are all very basic questions you have asked about the app. If you’re trying to learn by fire you’re going to be much more frustrated than if you take a week or so to learn it first, before starting the job.

If you have to start the job today my recommendation would be to get an Avid running Tiger and learn FCP later.

You’ve already got a chip on your shoulder. You’ll have a much easier go of it if you stow the anger and add some education. Take the time to watch some tutorials. Do a google search for “FCP Tutorials” and you’ll find TONS, most of them free.

    Good luck.

You can get a lot of the answers you need from the Final Cut manual, but for good tutorials try a subscription to Lynda.com
You’ll find way more info than you need.

And uh… Oh yeah– there are a ton of tutorials right here on Creative Cow as well. 😉
