  • Lose firewire output while printing HDV

Posted by Alfred Guzzetti on March 18, 2008 at 2:32 am

While outputting a 20-minute program to HDV (Sony HVR-M25U deck), I keep losing the firewire signal toward the end of the program, not always at the same place. I’ve tried rebooting, trashing preferences. Any ideas?

Is your media drive on a FW drive?

    Yes, a firewire 800 connection.

    [Alfred Guzzetti] “firewire 800”

Keep in Mind that all firewire ports on the computer share the same firewire bus. Also when any firewire 400 device is connected to that bus everything connected via firewire drops to firewire 400 speed.

I have had MANY times then trying to lay DV video back to tape that I would get drop outs. I was caused by the firewire bus getting slightly overloaded on how much data is being sent through it at one time.

You have a MacPro so I would try adding media drives inside the computer, that will put your media drives on a completely separate bus then the camera/deck.

Many thanks for your helpful suggestion.

I may have figured this one out. I had been bussing the firewire signal through my M-Audio box to the deck for years without any problem. But I disconnected the box and plugged the deck directly into the computer and got a clean output of the whole program.
