  Question about sequences in Final Cut 6 from FC5

  I am a newbie to the whole Final Cut Pro thing, so forgive by ignorance…

  My question is this: If I built a sequence in Final Cut 5 that did not match the native clip specs (in other words, had to render every clip as it was laid down 🙁 ), will this sequence successfully come into Final Cut 6 effortlessly without needing to render the current sequence of clips (still not matching the native clip specs), nor needing to render any further editing I do on the sequence. Meanwhile, everything (playback specifically) happening in real time – this scenerio based on just 1 video layer (4 audio layers) and cuts only…no effects.

  Sorry if this sounds simpleton…I’m an Avid editor just starting my way into the FCP jungle.

  Eric,

  Here’s what you need to do.

  1. Open a new seq. in FCP 6.

  2. Take any peice of original video from the original project and drop it into the new sequence. When FCP asks you if you’d like to change the settings to match the clip, answer “yes,” as in affirmative, un huh, yo…

  3. Cut and paste everything from the original timeline into the new timeline. Now you will have a seq. setup properly.

  Does this mean you never have to render? No, of course not, eventually everything must be rendered. But, you won’t havbe to render every time you make an edit as most editing will be in realtime unless you wind up with enough layers of A&V to eat up your RT capability.

  Thanks, David.

  Yeah, that’s what I meant. My goal is to edit in real time as I do in the Avid…but, edit on THIS particular sequence with everything in place as long – as I don’t move the media files.

  As I stated before, I’m currently tooling around in Final Cut Pro 5 with my eyes and wallet set on pulling the trigger on Final Cut Studio 2.
