  • New to HD – workflow/importing question

    Hi all-

I will be working with HD footage for the first time, and also just got the latest FCP Studio, so wanted to see if anyone can point to helpful articles/resources on basic workflow/settings suggestions? I’m assuming the FCP manual will have some good tidbits, anxiously awaiting it’s arrival from Fed Ex.

And I feel this could be a silly question, but do I need to import HD footage using an HD camera/device? I have a miniDV deck that I would like to use. Can I use that and just change my import settings to reflect that I’m working with HD?

    Thanks much,
    April

[April Hill] “do I need to import HD footage using an HD camera/device?”

    yes

    No

As for anything else it will mostly depend on what flavor of HD you will be working with. A little more info on what camera format of HD you will be working with.

    April,

I’m assuming you will be working with HDV. While it is recorded onto plain vanilla DV tape, it is a completely different beast, so yu will need the camera or a deck for capturing.

We are now several years into the product lifecycle of HDV, so you will be able to find an enormous number of posts of the subject here as well as on the HDV Forum. I suggest you bone up on it before you need the information by searching both forums and reading whatever you can find on HDV in FCP and all about your camera.

As the others have mentioned, you cannot capture HDV material from a DV deck. We have the Sony M15U HDV deck here which is a nice entry level HDV machine. It plays back / records DV, DVCAM and HDV in both NTSC and PAL.

My suggestion would be to sell your current MiniDV deck and replace it with something like this. That’s what we did here.

Thanks for the responses – I don’t know any info about the camera except that it’s a Sony, as it’s a client’s. She was planning on just giving me the tapes that I would import with my minDV deck, but also said she could leave the camera for me to use for capturing, so will probably go that route until I’m able to purchase an HDV deck.

Will look around for useful threads on the topic of importing HDV, thanks.

Please get the terminology correct. This will ensure we fully understand your questions in the future.

To Import is to take a file that is already on your computer and bring it into Final Cut Pro.

To Digitize is to capture video footage from video tape into Final Cut Pro.

What you will be going is digitizing, not importing.
