Exporting high quality format from FCP for best results
The colorist I hired to correct my short film gave me the film back in DPX format. That is, every single still frame of the film. I used APA DVX to QT translator to convert those files into a very high quality quicktime film. One that cannot be played back on a normal computer. Every time I convert that file into a file that can be used in quicktime, like DVC pro 50 or H264 the quality goes to hell. I have tried so many different things, and I can’t figure it out. If you know anything about this process please respond.
Next, I gave up on the footage I got from the colorist and ended up coloring the film myself. I was working in DVCPRO50 format. I was happy with the colors by the end of it, but now when I export it as a quicktime movie I get terrible quality when I burn the DVD. Does anyone know how to export a file from Final Cut to get good picture quality for a DVD. Whenever I do it gets completely pixilated. Please note I do not have Compressor.

Compressor comes with FCP, it automatically gets installed when you install FCP.

So why not call the colorist and ask for your project in a file format you can use?

Try the “Chroma Smooth/Sharpening” (Nattress Film filters). Set the sequence to render in High Precision and send to Compressor directly from the FC time-line.
