  DVCPRO HD/HDV color space?

  I’m having a color space issue. Hopefully someone has an answer. We have a HD digital cinema theater where I work. We play our HD films on a QuVis Cinema player. The films that we import from HDCAM tapes look great, good color and brightness.

  However we produce our own HD films on the HVX200 or a Sony HDV camera. I edit in Final Cut Pro under the native HD format (i.e. DVCPROHD or HDV), color monitored and corrected.

  I send the finished project to the theater using this workflow:

  -I drop my DVCPRO HD finished product into a new sequence which is 1920×1080 / square / uncompressed 8-bit

  -I render this and export the sequence as indvidual targas

  -the in QuApps (QuVis’s cinema file transcoder) I make the frames into a playable digital cinema file.

  Everything works great however the films look at least 2 stops darker in our theaters than how they were shot. The only thing that makes them look better is some slight gamma correction, but even that looks a bit off.

  Does anyone know where my color space problem is? Is it the step from compressed HD to 8-bit uncompressed? 709 or 601 issues? I’m kinda lost. Next step is to call QuVis.
