No reference my #@*&#
Posted by Justin Gray on March 11, 2008 at 5:43 pmI’m using a Sony UVW-1800. It’s saying no reference and the throughput picture from FCP is slowly rolling (not locked), even though I tried connecting it to a black burst generator. Unfortunately, I have a AJA Kona LHe with only component outs, so there’s no composite out to use as a Ref in on the deck. Does this sound like a deck problem? Are there any menu setups that turn the reference mode on and off? I’m stumped.

March 11, 2008 at 5:57 pmI hate that deck. Just go ahead and record something… when you playback it should be fine – no rolling black bar. I have that exact problem here, but since it records perfectly fine and we rarely make SP tapes anymore I don’t bother troubleshooting it.

March 11, 2008 at 6:05 pmYou need to connect your black burst to the Ref In on the LH and then set it to Ref In on the Control Panel.

Actually, since the UVW-1800 has an internal TBC and the Kona LHe can supply its own sync by setting Genlock to freerun, blackburst isn’t necessary if the cables are run properly from one device to another.
There are several ways to route video cables when using an I/O card and monitoring a deck such as the UVW-1800, if you connect the dots for me indicating precisely how have your devices cabled-up I can help you solve rolling bar issue.

March 11, 2008 at 7:04 pmthanks for all of the responses. I’ve tried everyones suggestions but I still get the “No REF” alarm on the deck and an unstable picture. Just to be clear, I know that this is not effecting my recording. What I’m trying to do is use the deck in EE mode to feed a DVD recorder, seeing as though all of my Kona outputs are only component. I have a bare bones setup. Component out from the Kona LHe, looping through JVC component monitor to component in on the eta deck. that’s it. I’ve tried to feed reference to the deck using a BSG black sync generator going straight into the ref in and looping through the Kona Bob as Walter suggested, but still no change. Unless I’m really missing something obvious, or the sync generator is bad, It could be a deck problem?

March 11, 2008 at 7:56 pmFirst, forget about the black burst, if you’re not running it to everything and not got it terminated properly everywhere you’re just multiplying your sources of sync problems.
Next, route the output of the Kona card directly into the deck and make certain that both of the little black 75ohm terminator switches near the ref inputs are switched to the on position. Also, make certain that your Kona card is set for Genlock “Freerun.” Now, monitor the output of the UVW-1800 and see if the bar is rolling.

March 11, 2008 at 8:35 pmOK, I did what you said: took away the black burst completely, routed the component directly from the Kona box to the deck, made sure both ref terminator switches were set to on, and set the kona card to “Freerun” genlock. Still no change.

March 11, 2008 at 8:51 pmI have the same deck. I think having “REF” video and the rolling black line are 2 different things. I think your problem with the rolling black line is you are trying to monitor the COMPONENT INPUT by using the COMPOSITE out to a monitor? Yes?
My understanding was the reason the black line was there was because I didn’t have a component monitor.
When I record a COMPOSITE INPUT I don’t get that rolling black line. I get it just when I’m recording a COMPONENT Input.
My thoughts, for what they are worth.

What Aaron says. That deck usually records fine even when you see the bar.
Although I am questioning your setup. Why put the deck in EE? Why not hook up the Kona straight to your DVD recorder?
And if your deck is claiming no ref and you have reference hooked up, something is not connected there. Also, if you have ref, you ref the card AND the deck. You mentioned that there’s no composite out on the Kona, well, if you send it ref, and send the deck ref, they have the same ref. See? What kind of blackburst do you have?
