  • Urgent: media reconnects in timeline but not in browser

    Hi-
I’m trying to integrate two large FCP projects to give to an editor this wednesday (12 march 08). I’m running 5.0 and so is the editor, but the associate editor has 6 so he gave me an XML which I successfully opened in my FCP 5. All the bins and clips and sequences are there and the timelines seem to run fine.

But the browser lists the media as offline! I can’t open any clips in the viewer, nor can I use the F (find) function to open clips visible in the timeline in the viewer. I can perform reconnect media functions on the bins as a whole or on individual clips, and FCP always locates the file and allows me to choose reconnect BUT IT DOES NOT RECONNECT IN THE BROWSER. The clips remain offline and unusable except for viewing the timelines. Needless to say, this is a huge problem and we can’t do anything with the project till it is resolved.

I’ve tried restarting everything as well as trashing preferences, to no avail. PLEASE HELP!

    Thanks!
    Rachel

What version of XML did the editor export? Perhaps he gave you v4 which FCP5 doesn’t fully understand? Try exporting a v2 or v3 XML from FCP6 to pass back to FCP5.

Hi- He exported versions 1-4 of XML, and the only version that didnt give us a “please choose translation document” message was version 1, so that’s what i’m using.

He also exported xmls in two ways: first, the whole project, which did not give him the option of including master clips outside selection. This is what I imported and was working with before when I posted, so I thought maybe that was the issue.

I then tried importing the xml files of each bin, which he had made separately and included master clips. The master clips imported in a separate folder along with each bin. All were still offline. Now, some allow me to reconnect and others dont. Most dont- just as before they allow me to select the file but don’t actually reconnect it.

I also noticed that all the media start times for all the clips in the browser have been changed to 00:00:00;00, though media ends and durantions remain correct. Scary stuff.

I will try XML version 2 or 3 again to see if it might work. Any thoughts on the issue of the translation document? Or any other comments? THANKS!

    Hi again,
So XML version 2 imports this time (could have sworn it didnt work yesterday), and the media starts have timecode at least. Relinking is working but only one file at a time– and it won’t let me search for the files, i have to locate them individually AND make sure “all files” are shown because it doesn’t recognize them as video files. It would take hours– maybe days– to reconnect all these files individually. Is this possibly an issue FCP 6 capturing with .mov extensions and FCP 5 without? The clips I want to recognize were originally captured in FCP 6 but I’m running 5. THANKS!

Sheesh, of course it is and sorry I didn’t think of that earlier. That’s exactly what is tripping you up. The good thing is that you can use Automator to add a suffix to your clips, but it might mess up any other relationships you have to other media. Only change the names of the new stuff you receive.

Thanks. But I’m running 5 and not 6. I see in the forums that people have had this issue with 6 a lot. Is it an issue in the other direction too? Just to get this straight– my files captured in FCP 6 have .mov extensions, whether those are hidden or not. But FCP 5 doesn’t use the extensions. So I’d have to rename them all and take the .mov off, then reconnect and it would get them all at once? If I did this, would it mess up my sequences? I just want to make sure I understand fully before doing something huge like rename all my files. Thanks so much,
    R

Hey Jeremy- I just went ahead and changed the file names with automator and the rest of the clips reconnected fine! Now all I have to do is redo the ones that I had already reconnected to the .mov files, but that’s not nearly as much work as doing the rest one by one. THANKS SO MUCH!!!
