Editing DVCPRO HD 24p
Posted by Navin Ramaswaran on March 4, 2008 at 2:58 pmHi there, I have read extensively about doing this but I’m still having issues. We shot a feature with the Varicam using the DVCPRO HD 24pA settings. The footage was captured in FCP via Firewire with the DVCPRO HD 720p60 preset.
Firstly, was the footage captured incorrectly?
I need to work in a 24fps timeline because the final output will be film. I am unable to remove the advance pulldown. FCP gives me an error saying ” Filename does not contain DVCPRO, DVCPRO-HD or DVCPRO-50 NTSC video” when I use the Remove Advance Pulldown function. I tried using Compressor to convert the footage to DVCPRO HD 720p24 but the image become ‘struddery’ as if non-redundant frames have been removed.
What should I do? Pls help! Thank you:)

March 4, 2008 at 3:49 pmIf you shot DVCPRO HD 720p24, all you need to do is choose the DVCPRO HD 720p24 Easy Setup and FCP will capture it properly, remove the pulldown while it captures it. Heck, I have even had my Easy Setup to 720p60 and FCP still captured the footage properly, as the flags are set on the footage, and FCP detects those flags and removes the pulldown if it is present.
Also be aware that if you capture via firewire audio will be slightly off sync (in my experience). Audio is ahead of video by 2 frames, and will have to be adjusted when you cut the footage into the timeline.

The 24pA setting does not exist in the 720p editing environment, only in interlace captures is the Advanced setting allowed.

Nope not for 24 fps. you need to capture using the 720p24 setting over FW to correctly capture the content.
Since you have never done this before – why are you not reading the correct workflow as written in the FCP manual for this??

March 4, 2008 at 5:46 pmThanks for the feedback guys.
Gary, the footage was provided to me (already captured). I was pretty certain that it was captured incorrectly, just needed to make sure. Thanks again for the reply.
So, just to confirm, is there anything I can do to remedy this, besides recapturing everything?http://www.spliceproductions.ca

March 5, 2008 at 3:28 pmHi Shane,
You mentioned that you have used the 720p60 Easy Setup when capturing 24p material before. It seems like this was how my footage was captured, but I can’t seem to get rid of the redundant frames now. FCP tells me the frame rate of the footage is 59.97. Is there anything I can do besides recapturing everything to solve this issue?
Thanks for your help. -

I have…and FCP detected the flags on the tape and captured as 720p24. I can’t explain that, other than I was using FCP 5.0.4 at that time. I have tried to replicate that with FCP 6 and I can’t seem to….it will capture 720p24 as 720p60 if I have the Easy Setup to 720p60.
And you can’t reverse telecine it in my experience. The only thing that will work is a recapture. Sorry.
Are you SURE it is 24p? Does it look ultra smooth, or more film like?

Have you tried the Software Frame Rate Converter under the FCP > Tools menu?
That is what that tool was designed for– Make sure that your clips are in the root level of the browser ( or open a new project and drag the files to the “new” browser window to process.

March 6, 2008 at 2:37 pmHi Gary,
I did use the Frame Rate Converter, but my footage looks like they are in slow mo. I reconfirmed with the DP and he is positive it was shot 24p. -

did you tell it to remove the redundant frames?
did you tell it to create a new movie
did you tell it to import the NEW movie into FCP when Done.My guess is you did not tell the FRC to remove the frames – that would cause it to run slower than it should.

March 6, 2008 at 4:35 pmAnd if you used the FRC, and it made the footage slow motion, than the footage was 720p60. 720p24 doesn’t do slow motion via the FRC.

March 10, 2008 at 3:46 pmYep… looks like my issues has been resolved. I did all of the above and my footage works fine. I thought it was in slow mo die to the lack of audio and the way the test scene was shot.
The only thing I’m noticing is the running time of my 24p clips vs the original 60 clips are different. Will this cause a huge audio sync issue? So far I noticed the sync being off in one of the longer captures.
Thanks again guys for your help!
