  • Convert Firewire control to RS-422 – is this possible?

Posted by Stuart Simpson on March 3, 2008 at 2:20 pm

    Hi folks,

We’ve had to move our HVR-M35 HDV deck to a new ingest room, and the move is causing us a few device control problems. The M35 only supports device control over firewire, and we’re set up to take device control over serial RS-422. Is there a box that will convert the firewire control at the deck to serial control? I’ve googled and can’t seem to find anything useful…

    Thanks,

    -Simmie

    Simmie,

Our team recently purchased a Sony HDV deck with HDMI out and a Convergent Design HD Connect MI converter box. Convergent Design box takes the HDMI and firewire inputs from the deck and converts them to SDI and RS-422 output and control. I have a Kona 2 capture card and have not had any problems. The deck was $3000 and the converter box was $500 a big savings over buying the Sony HDV deck with SDI and RS-422 connections ($6000).

    Hope that helps.

    Cheers,

    Jamie

One thing to consider as you move forward is simply moving all of your computers to the ingest room. We now have two of our system in a central rack unit and are about to move our third. This allows us to continue to use Firewire control on both of our HDV decks since they are in the same rack as the computer. Also makes the edit suites incredibly quiet since there is nothing but the monitors and speakers in the suites.

We use the Gefen 5500 HD units to allow the computers to be located out in the rack.

    Thanks for the thoughts guys.

The M35 has HDSDI out but no RS-422 (seems like a stupid oversight I know…) So we can already get great images from the deck, just not device control.

As for moving the machines, we already have 25 meters of fiber, SDI, and RS-422 traveling down the hall, seems a shame to waste it…
