max clip size in HDV?
Hello,
I am editing a long-format documentary in FCP 6.0 with footage in HDV and DV. This is my first time working with the HDV format.Does anyone have any experience working with long clips in HDV? Is there any downside to loading 15 minutes, 30 minutes of footage in one clip? I’d like to load-in quickly, then organize subclips later.

THere shouldn’t be any problems other than those presented by the HDV material itself.. HDV isn’t a very efficient codec, but long captures shouldn’t be a problem per se… Search this forum on the talk surrounding the GOP structure of HDV… There’s a lot of work arounds including capturing it as something OTHER than HDV. Like ProRes instead.

Depending on the exact format and devices you’re using FCP will most likely break each shot into a separate clip. You can do that on capture.

yes, the automatic clips are very handy. But I notice that it isn’t happening for HDV footage shot on a different camera. So it looks like some manual logging will be necessary to keep those clip sizes manageable.

There is a setting for this in FCP to turn it on and off. It works with some devices, not with others.
