FCP Render Issue – File in Use Error
We are having a reoccurring issue with FCP 6.0.2 while rendering sequences with After Effects created QT’s in the Animation codec. The sequences are 720p/59.94 DF and render time for each sequence is roughly about 10 min on our systems. We are running Tiger and all quicktime updates have been done, and I have even tried turning off spotlight as per Apple’s site suggests for this error. Still to no avail the error has not stopped? Does anybody know what causes this? It is a real pain to have to render the same sequence 4 or 5 times until it is complete.

YOu are getting this message in FCP from AE rendered files? RIght?
Are the files open in the background or in quicktime? Have you quit AE? What else is open?

Yes the files in the timeline have been rendered out of AE for use in FCP in the animation codec. AE is not open, nor is any other application that I know about is open and spotlight is also completely unchecked for indexing anything.

That animation file is rendered i take it, so try deleting your render files if you can afford it. If not, try forcing a re-render on that file by dropping a filter on the file and then deleting it.
A total render file clean out will be most beneficial but might take a while depending on your timeline.

Dumping the render files isn’t the answer for this issue as it is occurring in brand new sequences/brand new projects on the first render. We are replacing lower 3rd graphics in long form broadcast shows, so it is more I/O work than anything. The sequences will render after 4 or 5 tries successfully, but it has become a nuisance in our workflow and I am just trying to get to the bottom of why I would get this error when the file is not in use. I also do get occasionally a message saying my video is not optimized for FCP? Could this be part of it? I don’t know why I would get this when I have digitized the media using FCP, it doesn’t make any sense.

Hmmmm. Do you use this machine to capture or do you capture on another machine? What version of it all are you on and did you do a fresh install of your current OS and FCP when you started this journey?
Also, what kind of drives do you have?

Yes we do capture on multiple systems, but they all have identical setups, everything was freshly installed when we got the systems, but the optimized issue probably is not related to the render problem, I just threw it out there.
We use a Facilis system for our central storage.

Well, perhaps not directly, it just seems weird that you are getting these issues together.
Anything else like you rendered out the Animation files @ 23.98 instead of 23.976?
And as far as file being in use, I’d suggest that is a permissions issue that needs to be addressed by someone who can help with your shared storage. I unfortunately don’t have that type of experience.
