Posted by Barry Meyer on February 22, 2008 at 5:50 pm

When I started on this new editing job (I’m fairly green to digital editing) there was lots of footage already shot and logged and captured onto the Mac, via FCP6. All that footage was shot with a Canon XHA1, and has a resolution of 1920×1080 — shot in 1080i60.

My problem is that I have shot new footage with the same camera, but my footage has a resolution of 1440×1080.

I’ve tried changing the capture/seq/device settings to match 1080i60, but nothing works. I had noticed that the settings were on 1080i50 and HDV when I went into make changes.

Also, when I right click for info on all the previously shot footage, the codecs all say HDV 1080i60. And so does the newer footage I’ve shot.

I’ve gone through the camera, as well, trying to see if there is something in the set up that had been changed.

Any thoughts on this issue would be appreciated.

    Barry,

HDV is an anamorphic format, meaning 1920×1080 pixels are squeezed onto a chip that is 1440×1080 when recorded and unsqueezed when played back in FCP to display 1920×1080. Set you Easy Setup to HDV and 1080i60 and proceed.

[Dave LaRonde] “Imagine that — it was all shot with the same camera! Apparently, it was all captured the same way, too.”

Thanks for the response, Weiss. I should clarify… the clip’s info which lists res of 1920×1080 — that was the info I got when I right-clicked the clip from in the Capture Scratch folder.

When I right-click and select “format” info from the same clip in the Project Bin, it says that frame size is 1440×1080.

The Easy Setup was already set to what you recommended, but the test footage I shot still doesn’t have the 1920×1080 res. Is it something in the capture, then? Is there a way I can check the capture settings on a clip?

    I know, I know… tired questions from newbies…

And thanks for the encouragement to ask stupid questions, LaRonde! Such a helpful young lad.

    Barry,

Exactly what does that mean? Tell us how you arriving at that.

Keep in mind that we have no idea how you’re monitoring or what your display is set to. You need to give us that inormation too…

Just know that if you captured via firewire, the video you captured is QT native HDV, so the problems you are experiencing are most likely not file related, but rather some setting pertaining to the display of the files in FCP. Eventually, after you give enough info we can figure this out.

Thanks David. I’ll try and get as much info to you.

By “test footage” I mean simply that I’m shooting video and logging/capturing with FCP6, to compare and contrast the newly shot video info with the previously shot clip info.

I don’t know what settings were used with the previous footage (that lists a res of 1920×1080 in the clip info in the Capture Scratch folders), however, before I had done the Easy Setup on my own a while back, the setting I recall seeing in FCP had 1080i50 and HDV.

Presently, I’m shooting with a Canon XH A1, which is 1080i60. All footage, old and new, has been shot on Sony HDM60 (Mini DVC) and captured to FCP6 with capture/now.
