  • Making individual clips from timeline

Posted by Jason Weitz on February 13, 2008 at 7:52 pm

So here’s what I’m trying to do: put a mess of clips in a row on the timeline, use the blade tool to pick out the bits I want, then take those bits and get the individual clips to export through compressor, and to do this by making as few duplicates as possible (I would like to media manage the project or save space in any way possible). Again, I don’t want the timeline as an edited sequence, I am trying to pull individual clips. Also, I need to be able to name them differently (which I can’t seem to do by simply pulling the clips into a bin-I rename one and all the ones like it get renamed as well). What is the best way to do this?

Use the make clips independent function from the Modify menu before you pull the clips from the sequence to the bin.

    All the best,

If I do the make independent clips, am I creating new files in my capture folder, or is it just a reference, like a subclip?

For your next project, this is what Log & Capture is for. You log your tapes before you capture them, and you won’t need to do this after the fact.

For your current project, look up “Media Manager” in your FCP manual, & read these articles:

We captured straight to a computer (or via P2 card) so that’s not really an option.

The Media Manager is still an option for you.

Now I’ve been playing with the Media Manager and I intend to use it, but it still doesn’t give me individual clips, does it? Unless you’re suggesting using the sources clips after a manage, but the problem is that all the clips have color correction on them.

    No.

Yes, it will give you individual clips. This is explained in the Manual, & in the articles I referred you to.

Yet another possibility would be to export self-contained QuickTime Movies from your sequence one at a time, with in/out points set to mark the beginning and ending of each one. Marking the ins/outs would be equivalent to using the blade tool in what you first described as the problem.

You’d now have self-contained “clips” on your disk that you could import back into FCP and use as you wish. See “Exporting a QuickTime Movie File” in Part III of the FCP v6 manual, pg. 240, if you want to go that way.

Here is my workflow for this: Capture your tape, open it in the wiever, use “DV start/stop detect” (this will give you all the markers under your clip), Mark them all and use “make subclips”, throw the subclips in your timeline and delete and adjust the clips you wanna keep as individual files. Mark them all and use mediamanager to delete everything else. This will give you all the clips as individual files and delete everything else. (dont forget handles)

    Hope this helps!
