  • FCP6 with DSR11 – capture just stops!

Posted by Tim Taylor on February 5, 2008 at 1:44 pm

When capturing from a MiniDV tape using a Sony DSR-11 deck, i have tried to do a whole tape capture, but FCP randomly stops capturing and tells me the tape has reached its end – but it hasn’t!

I have followed the manual to the letter – the fact that I can get it capturing suggests I’ve got my settings right, yes?

I’m at a loss as to why this is happening??? It also happens when i use Firewire PAL, Firewire PAL Basic or Non-Controllable Device.

I’m using DV PAL 48khz input.

The portion of tape that does capture, is fine and shows in my BIN

I have also set capture length to 64 mins, then ‘unticked’ that selection so no parameters applied. What is going wrong!

Why does FCP insist the tape has finished, when it hasn’t, and stops capturing!?!

It’s driving me nuts! Please help……

    Tim,

You likely have timecode breaks. Best remedy is to dub the tape over to a new one with new TC.

    Have a wonderful day.

This can happen if you have places on your tape where the TC ends and then starts again from 00:00:00;00. Chris’ idea of dubbing to a new tape should fix this.

Changed the DSR-11 to a Panasonic GS230 camcorder, and the problem goes away!

Must be something to do with FCP and the Sony deck, as the deck works perfectly under Adobe Premiere Pro on a Windows machine.

Unfortunately, I’ve had FCP forced on me at work, so I’ve got to use it, so I guess my employer will have to come up with some replacement hardware.

I like FCP6, although I’m still getting used to it, just a shame that the trouble free transition I was expecting with a Mac hasn’t occurred… Macs can be just as problematic as Windows it seems 🙁

Think I may have now identified the problem…. the DSR-11 is stuck in DVCAM mode (we have no remote!) whereas my tapes are all miniDV recorded.

Going to see if I can get hold of a remote control, change the setting, and hope for the best!
