OT: Sony DSR1500 and mini DV recording
Posted by Jesenko Fazlagic on January 28, 2008 at 5:23 pmHey gang,
I posted this on the Sony DV forum but no one is responding there so I thought I’d try here too.
I have a Sony DSR-1500 (not 1500A) DVCam deck with analog I/O board. It is supposed to be able to play back and record mini DV (besides DVCam), but I can’t find any menu item that will set the recording format.
Does it autosense the type of cassette that is inserted? When we record to a mini DV tape and play it back it says “DVCam” on the front display.
Can anybody shed some light on this? Thanks!//Jesenko

January 28, 2008 at 5:45 pmI’m not familiar with the dsr-15 but on the dsr-11 you must set this through the on-screen menu using the remote. It will auto sense for playback. There should be a down loadable manual available on line.
“everything is broken” ……1st. coined by Esther Philips I believe.

January 28, 2008 at 5:49 pmthere’s a menu item in the 1500 for DVCAM/DV recording format. Hook it up to a TV with the Super out and it should be easy enough to find.

January 28, 2008 at 6:01 pmHi
Quote: Cassettes that have been recorded by a DV-format recorder can be played back on this unit but cannot be used fro recording at editing operation.
DSR-1500 Operation manual Page 23.Although this normally refers to insert editing functionality, it seems to be the only reference in the manual to DV format tapes.
There doesn’t seem to be a Menu option for Rec Mode, as in the DSR-11/25 models.
On a FW-based system the QuickTime DVCAM/DV setting option found in FCP’s Audio/Video Settings>A/V Devices>Playback Output/Different Output>Video>Options has an effect on this, if the deck is functional in this mode.

January 28, 2008 at 6:59 pmHey Lee,
That’s what I would look for, but I don’t have that menu option. Do you have the same deck? What option boards do you have?
Thanks,//Jesenko

January 28, 2008 at 7:54 pmOn the menu tree, under setup menu — operational functions, the DSR1500A has the item “REC FORMAT (REC FMT)”.
The DSR1500 under setup menu — operational functions, does NOT have “REC FORMAT (REC FMT)”.
I believe the DSR1500 can play back, but not record, DV format. It can only record DVCAM.
This is the reason that if you insert a DV pre-recorded cassette into the DSR1500, the NO EDIT indicator lights up, as described on page 23 of the user manual.
This point is not clearly made in the manual, but the DSR1500A seems to have been upgraded with the REC FORMAT option, which is not on the DSR1500.

January 28, 2008 at 8:09 pmJesenko,
Steve’s response makes sense. There are differences between the 1500 and 1500A model. I didn’t know about the DV record issue. I did know that while the 1500 can play DVCPro it cannot send the signal over Firewire (huh?). They fixed that in the A model. Sorry if I caused any confusion.Lee Berger

January 28, 2008 at 8:31 pmThanks for all your responses guys. I guess I was wrong (or read something wrongly written) about the 1500 being able to record mini DV. On to devising the plan B… 🙂
Thanks again – what a great forum!//Jesenko
