    I am cutting together in FCP 5.04 the following:
    anamorphic PAL DV
    non-anamorphic (5:4) PAL DV- the equivalent of 4:3 in NTSC
    4:3 NTSC DV ripped from DVD’s

    I have lots of subtitles to create, so I want to use a conventional 5:4 PAL DV frame for my final sequence which will allow me to letterbox the anamorphic PAL DV and have space for titles around the letterbox.
    Can I use FCP 5.04 or should I upgrade now to FCP 6?
    Is there a way to put the anamorphic DV PAL into a 5:4 PAL DV sequence without losing resolution? I was actually hoping that I would make the anamorphic DV appear sharper by reducing its size to fit into the standard PAL 5:4 frame.
    Any assistance with these pressing questions would be greatly appreciated!

    first off you are trying too hard and worrying too much with all these aspect ratio’s! try to think of DV PAL and DV-NTSC as simply being 4:3 … that is the effective aspect ratio of these formats (after pixel aspect ratio is taken into account).

    your FCP5 setup will be just fine

    use Easy Setup to choose DV PAL 48kHz (not the anamorphic version) … drop in any of your footage and FCP will take care of any resizing necessary. the anamorphic footage will be letterboxed just as you have been hoping.

    Thanks for your advice, Andy Meeks. I realized after I posted that the aspect ratio is really the same for PAL and NTSC –4:3. But apart from that, I have noticed that my anamorphic DV PAL footage is noticeably lower quality when simply dropped into a DV PAL 4:3 timeline and I’m concerned….I read on a forum somewhere that resizing using wireframe etc. is another method, just want to run down that idea and see if that or another way’s a better one. I get a green render line on my timeline for the anamorphic PAL footage in the 4:3 seq, which also makes me wonder. Thanks for any more advice,

    You’re doing the right thing – the green line indicates that you’ll have to render the sequence for final output. Final Cut is deliberately reducing the visual quality to give you real-time playback. Select all your footage, hit Sequence>Render All to see full quality.

    Thanks Stuart. I’m relieved to know I’m not losing res by having to render PAL anamorphic DV when outputting to PAL 4:3 DV.

    Another question: Am I kidding myself that the audience will have the illusion of a sharper image since the Anamorphic image is made smaller to fit into the 4:3 wrapper? (Just grimacing at the whole format choice -DV-budget reasons).
