I was wondering if anyone out there has any tips for speeding up color correction in FCP
using the 3 way color corrector. I am used to working on a Symphony Nitris where I can save up to 8 corrections in buckets in the color correction tool and then assign each bucket to the keyboard. This makes going through a show with lots of cuts very quick. Is there any similar workflow in FCP? Anything I can change from a mouse function to a keyboard shortcut would help. Unfortunately time and budget make using Color impractical. I am also finding a fairly noticeable lag between the time when I change something in the 3 way CC and when my monitors and external scopes update through the Kona 3 card. The show I am color correcting has a cut about every 25 frames and it is taking forever. I am using 6.02 with Prores HQ 1080i 29.97 on an 8 core.

    Hey Chris,

on the shows i do finishing for, i got about 5 presets for color correction, what i do is usually make the filter and then add it to my favorites folder, that way if i need it just peek in there and drop it on the clip. and you can make up to how many presets you want on there.

    hmm… I wonder what this button does…

It’s not the fastest I’ll give you that.

You CAN save a favorite color correction setup by dragging the little “hand w/a clip” icon over into your bins. Have 8 of those and drag them onto clips as you go.

as far as keyboard – I don’t think so.

Lag to Kona – yep, it lags for me too.

I make little bins with a set of CC filters for various repeating shots like interviews. The trick is to name them so that they sort themselves alphabetically so that when you highlight and drag & drop they are in the right order.

The other trick is to take a representative shot with grades and copy it down the timeline after the end of the show. When it reappears in the timeline, locate down to that shot, copy and then paste attributes>filters etc.
