  • Templates or plug-ins available for common split screen and motion screen effects?

Posted by Adrian Makai on January 18, 2008 at 1:57 am

This might be a dumb question but I can’t figure it out. Basically, I want to know if there is a quicker and easier way to move split screens around in my movie. Currently, I do this the long and tedious way – adding the various video tracks, fooling around with the motion settings, pivot points, key frames, etc., etc. Instead of doing all that, are there ready-made templates available for the most basic types of split screen effects, kind of like how there are so many filter plug-ins available for creating different looks?

For example, please take a look at this video. Starting at the 54 sec mark, the screen splits in two, and different edits start to roll within each split screen, for a comedic effect.

Are there ready made templates available for this sort of thing, where I can import a FCP project, copy attributes from various clips, and then go back into my original project and paste those attributes over my own clips?

I tried Googling but came up empty. Maybe my search terms were wrong.

Thanks in advance for any help!

FxFactory has plugins that can do something like this:

    2 options:
    1- DH Box https://www.digital-heaven.co.uk/fcplugins/dh_box.php
    2- Motion

Thanks. DH Box looks like it can help make things a bit more efficient. The FX Plug-ins are more for transitions.

I guess the FCP architecture itself does not lend itself to “one-click” implementation of common ‘scrolling and pushing’ split screen effects, that are used in documentaries and commercials. Using the motion controls, key frames, opacity settings with multiple video tracks (or using Apple Motion) seems to be the workflow.

Maybe one day someone will come up with a workaround that makes such editing tricks as easy to implement as a blur filter.

    Adrian,

If you still think that FxPlugs are for transitions, look at idustrial revolution Freebies 1.0 that can be downloaded with FxFactory. Yes, unlike DH Box, free.

I was wondering if you ever found a quicker way around this. I’m just having the same problems in finding some sort of master template that a 3rd party might make for FCP or Motion. I got the one plug in (DH Box) which helps a little, but I’m hoping by now there might be a complete template. Thanks for any reply.

Did not find a faster way. I cut down on the number of scrolling frame effects in my cut, and otherwise did the ‘long way’ with keyframes and motion controls in FCP. I’m sure there is a faster way. And if not, someone should definitely invent a plug-in, as these types of effects are pretty common in TV work, documentaries, etc.

why not create your own templates, Adrian? easy enough to do using nests. apply the motion effect to the nest then you an just drop your clips into /edit in the original sequences. save the project file for quick and easy re-use in future.
