I wonder if someone knows the answer to my problem:

I have some .AVI files created on a Sony DSR Hard Drive attached to a DSR-570, simple yes?

Right I want to convert them to standard PAL DV Quicktime files with FCP. I have done this before many times with other formats like HDV and HDCAM, so I used Media Manager and chose to “Recompress” the files.

Initially I chose DV PAL 48 Khz, chose a destination and hit “Okay.”

The trouble is that the newly created files are not .mov quicktime files, they are just .AVIs still…

I have not chosen “Copy” or “Move”

I have even tried “Uncompressed 8-bit PAL 48Khz” and some HD codecs. In fact it does not matter what codec you choose. The progress bar even says “Copying”. Whatever I do, they are still boring old, obsolete, dumped by MS .AVIs.

I am quite honestly a very experienced editor and have no idea how Apple could let Media Manager be so faulty. Does anyone know if I’ve missed something simple?

Oh by the way, the FCP manual is of no use here, I’ve checked all instances of AVIs being mentioned in each volume.

    I’m using FCP 6.0.2

Thanks all, hope some clever dude can help…

[Anthony Willis] “I have some .AVI files created on a Sony DSR Hard Drive attached to a DSR-570, simple yes? “

Um. No. FCP is a Quicktime based editor. Its not made to work with AVI.

You might try using Compressor for this instead. Its made to convert stuff to and from different formats. I am actually converting an AVI file to Uncompressed Quicktime as I type this and its working perfectly.

Media Manager is not without its problems, but I think you are asking it to do something its not made to do.

    MacOSX 10.4.6
    Quicktime 7.1.3

    Anthony,

This is not a FCP problem. No NLE has every codec in the world built-in. There are many, many flavors of AVI in this world, including many which are proprietary and can only be played on very specific hardware or with third-party codecs installed. If the files do not open in QT, which your AVIs most likely do not, that indicates a special codec is needed. So, how would you expect MM to handle them without that codec installed?

You did not mention the source of the AVI files. Exactly what app created them? Its posible that with that information I might be able to help you.

    Thanks David & John,

These AVIs were created by the Sony HD recorder, I’m afraid I can’t recall the model number,
they were not created by another application.

They are bog standard AVI files and actually play back perfectly in FCP without audio as they are also 720 x 576 DV PAL. I shall use them mute anyway so it is not terribly crucial to have sound thankfully.

I was more intrigued as to why FCP 6.0.2 cannot recompress them as it works fine with everything else. Furthermore it is perfectly reasonable to expect FCP’s Media Manager to work with these files, it is one of a group of things it is exactly intended to do. i.e. convert HDV to SD or proper HD, convert MPEG codecs to non GOP formats etc.

Media Manager is just another host of QT, and since the AVIs work well with all the QT apps on this machine, then it must be a bug or an un-published incompatibility.

Assuming FCP’s Media Manager just does not work with AVIs at the input stage, what I would like to know is what the intended workflow for Sony DVCAM media recorded onto these drives. XDCAM I understand has a simple workflow with FCP, why not this?

Oh and yes John, Compressor does indeed convert them fine as does plain old QT Pro. I guess you are both right in that FCP just isn’t designed to process these AVIs…

    Hmm

Sony is known to kind of do things “there way” at times.
Focus Enhancements has a product that is designed to convert one kind of file to another in the video world. You might want to take a look at:

I haven’t used this product but it might do what you need to convert your files.
