Mixing DVX and standard 29.97 Progressive
Let me preface this by saying that I know this must have been answered 500 times before. Sorry for that, i couldn’t find the right post. Anyhow, I’m editing a project with some xl1s footage and DVX footage. XL1 stuff shot in 30P HVX stuff shot in… ? I don’t know. When I look at the footage its slowed down and very interlacy looking. I tried using the “remove advanced pulldown” tool under the “tools”. but this does not seem to help. I’m using FCP6 and I’ve never before had problems with 24P footage, from the DVX or HVX but this time I think I captured it wrong or something. It was captured off of the xl1 as a deck. Thats been fine in the past with the apropriate setting. Any ideas on how to set my DVX footage right?

I think you need to pin point how the footage on the DVX was shot. If you go frame by frame you should be able to determine the pull down mechanism. If you see interlacing in every frame, it’s shot in 60i. If you see 3 frames of progressive and 2 frames of interlacing, then it’s 24P but not advanced. I can’t remember the mechanism for 3:2:2:3 which is advanced pulldown but it will also be a mix of progressive frames and non progressive frames (but not 3 prog then 2 interlaced).
Either way you’re going to be mixing 30p and most likely some type of 24p format so something is going to have to give. It might be better not to remove any of the pulldown and just keep the pulldown pattern and work on the 30p timeline. You’ll have to try this and see what this looks like. If you say stuff looks slowed down – I’m not really sure what’s going on there. If you do want to remove the pulldown you can do that in cinema tools.
Oh, and you started by saying DVX, then said HVX at some point and again said DVX. Just to be clear – the problem footage was shot with a DVX right?

I only mentioned HVX because it was another 24P project that I’d had no problems with. Yes, this is just the DVX. I just hooked the project up to an NTSC monitor and things look fine there. So i guess its all in my head. For some reason I don’t remember the image on the screen looking interlaced on the computer last time i worked with this type of footage. Its anoying. Am I degrading the image if I de-interlace it? Thanks. Silly post I know.
