Suggested Edit Suite Configuration – Comments?
Hey All,
I’m putting together an edit suite and was hoping for any commments you may have. I will be editing mainly Sony HDV, and JVC HDV, and occasionaly Digi-beta, all in a prores work-flow.
– Mac Pro, 4GB RAM, Geforce 8800
– Final Cut Studio 2
– Blackmagic Intensity Pro
– Sony LMD-2030W 20″ 16:9 HD Production Monitor
– Dell 2407WFP 24″ LCD
– RAID-0, 3x 500GB 7200.11 Seagate SATA Hard Drives
– 2TB External FW800 Backup DriveIdeally I would have liked a Decklink HD Extreme card for the SDI option, but this then demands a more expensive SDI monitor, which blows my budget. For the odd times we rent a digi-beta deck I was intending to connect it via the Intensity Pro’s analogue component and use firewire deck control…
Any comments?

That system should handle your formats well, but if you deal with digibeta, then you’ll have to digitize it over component instead of SDI. Not a big deal, but you’re going to analog instead of staying all digital.
But then if you go with an HDSDI card, then you can’t digitize the HDV footage over HDMI to edit in DVCPROHD or maybe even PRORES.
Have you looked at speakers/mixer?

Nope, you want to capture SDI from a DigiBeta deck. Quality different is noticeable.
A digibeta deck with Firewire control? Not sure which deck that is quite honestly.

You get the AJA Kona LHe which has both SDI and Component analog outputs. Or the AJA Kona 3 which has both SDI and Component analog outputs.

It seems the Kona LHe is the right card. It does digibeta “right” and will output HD RGB Component to the Sony LMD-2030W for HDV monitoring. (The HDMI input of the Intensity is null given that HDV can be capture to prores over firewire.)
I am wondering however if I can save $1300 by getting the Decklink HD Extreme. Do you know if the Sony LMD-2030W accepts the HD YUV Component out of the Decklink HD extreme. Sony’s documentation is inconsistant sometimes listing only RGB and not YUV… there is a difference right?

I would take a long hard look at the Sony monitor. I’ve seen them and been less than impressed, and the general opinion puts them somewhere between average to useless. I’d go for a decent second hand SD CRT any day. If you’re wedded to LCD, the JVC 24 and 20 inch models get a good rating for the money.

Have you purchased that monitor yet? I have yet to see a Sony LCD that is something I would actually use in an edit suite to work on. Panasonic 1700W is much better. TV Logic has a set of LCD’s that are even better.

You can do better that that with the Kona – you can use the component outs on an HDV deck to capture DVCProHD – better to edit with and excellent to look at. I forget from the original post if you have an HDV deck (although if not it’s far more preferable.
I would also go for the Kona because I think (and many other people think) they provide better support and backup. If you get the Excellent HVC 20″ CRT monitor you will save some of the extra cost of the card in all probability – as well as purchasing one of the best tube monitors I have ever seen.
I’ve seen far too many people have to backtrack after building similar set ups and buy something like the Kona, throwing away the original card they wasted money on. You gain so much more flexibility on delivery to clients for one thing. Unless all the work you do goes to the web, don’t cheap out on the capture card – it’s the centre of your system.

You can also capture to ProRes or Uncompressed HD as well. We’ve been cutting with the HDV to DVCPro HD workflow for about 18 months now using the Kona 3’s and it’s just a great workflow.
Going to test the ProRes HQ workflow with the next HDV project.

I know the LHe can handle analog and SDI both SD and HD (i have 2 and love em, although i wish they didnt always need video, even to do audio only captures)
I though the kona 3 was only SDI, no?
