Avid to FCP…. couple of problems!

I’m currently onlining a couple of projects on FCP that were cut on a Media Composer.
Automatic Duck was used for translating it across – all well and good as usual apart from a couple of oddities that need sorting:The director loves his speed effects and there are a few variable speed shots from the Avid which didn’t translate properly. Personally speaking I’ve never had much joy with the variable speed in FCP anyway, and usually just end up putting cuts in and using constant speed within those cuts. But has anyone else had any issues translating these variable speeds from Avid to FCP? And any luck in solving them?
Secondly, there were some morphing effects added in Avid which didn’t translate at all. Which I’m not surprised about, as FCP obviously doesn’t have a morphing plugin. Any ideas about how to solve it?

For the speed FX: You’re hosed!
Recreate by hand. One clue: if you look at the key frames you’ll often see a “random” key frame” which sends makes your new ramp totally whacked. Deleting that key frame often puts you back to the original intent.
If you’d started in FCP, you would open BOTH your off-line and on-line sequence to observe which key frame was random. But, you’re coming from AVID (not a good idea) and therefore, you’re toast. Sorry.

If the Director gives you an AAF they should translate ok. With OMF you’ll only see slo motion in FCP. With AAF’s I’ve found that about 80% of the speed changes in Avid come over perfectly.

It was an OMF it would appear. The post facility I’m in had done the conform before I came in, so I should have just been doing a straight checking and grading. But these little things have popped up…
To be honest, it was done at such a low res on the Avid that they probably wouldn’t have noticed the problems I’m getting anyway – mainly jerkiness and some nasty field problems even once I’ve cut it and sped it up manually. So it may actually be down to the motion in the shot coupled with the speed…
I shall get to the bottom of it 😉
