  • OMF to ProTools – How to get filtered audio over

Posted by Andrea Stewart on January 8, 2008 at 8:53 pm

I’ve filtered and effected some of my audio using Soundtrack and am now preparing my OMF for mix. Also some of the audio in my timeline is slowed down or reversed for effect.

I’m using Automatic Duck and am on FCP 5.1.4, FYI.

    Question is…

    A) How do I include “sent” audio in my OMF OR How do I remove filters that were put on in Soundtrack from the audio in my FCP timeline?

    B) Should I replace an time effected audio in my timeline with rendered audio? If so, how would I render those clips and reimport them to replace?

    Thanks,
    Andrea

OMF is an old format. It predates the existence of FCP and Soundtrack. None of the effects you do will carry across….and most likely will cause problems with the export.

Your best bet, considering the version of FCP and Soundtrack you are working with, is to export the effected clips from your timeline as AIFF 48k, then re-import them and replace the effected clips.

Right,I know the effects don’t carry over, but that’s my question — How do I export just those few clips?

OR How do I go about removing the filters applied in Soundtrack from within my timeline. I think it’s best if I remove all of them rather than export them – that would be a huge pain in the peducus for me.

The only audio clips that I want to export and replace with aiffs would be those that I time altered within FCP.

[Andrea Stewart] “Right,I know the effects don’t carry over, but that’s my question — How do I export just those few clips? “

Just mark the clips with in/out points in the timeline, then export as aiff

Control click the “sent” clip in your FCP timeline. Select “open in editor”. Soundtrack Pro opens and you can disable or remove your effects. However use of these “sent” clips in your timeline —may—cause strange or unexpected behavior in your OMF file…since this is something alien to the world of Pro Tools and Avid.

I suppose you could go to your autosave vault and find a version of your timeline before you sent the clips to Soundtrack Pro…then paste those clips into your timeline.

You should avoid doing FCP specific stuff when you know you will be exporting an OMF, just as you should avoid using video filters and crazy NLE specific effects when you have to export an EDL.

my experience is that FCP OMFs will include any effects work doen in SOUndtrack Pro.

they will NOT include filters applied in FCP.

if you WANT the FCP filters, i thnk it;s as simple as NESTING those clips.
no need to export and re-import.

as for removing the STP effects, i dont know a quick method,
but that’s just because i don’t affect things in STP if i know i need to make an OMF.

there may be a quick method, but i kind of doubt it.
what do you you get if you select the “Sent” audio in the timeline and hit Option Apple F?
that *may* bring up the original source file,
and you could do a replace edit to get it back into the timeline.
(or it may bring up the new STP file??)
