Does anyone know how to accomplish a convincing Day for Night where the night footage should have the look of video shot with the gain way up? Video seems to only pick up red hues in this case.

The only Day for Nights that I’ve seen help you turn your footage blue-ish. Andrew Kramer has an excellent tutorial, but I can’t seem to adjust it to suit a red look. It’s not as simple as changing the hue to a red tint.

I’ve also got Magic Bullet Looks (which I highly recommend – what a fun tool), but alas they’re Day for Night is also blue and will not swing to red convincingly. I’m building from scratch in MB Looks instead.

But if anyone knows a faster, more convincing way of doing this, let me know.

You will want to add some pink noise as high levels of gain usually adds tremendous noise to the picture.

Well folks. Here’s what I ended up doing. I did use MB Looks and created my own Day for Night setting. I used Color Saturation and Levels, Stopped down, setup some Spot Exposures and vignettes, added film grain, etc.

Once I got it back into FCP, I also de-interlaced it using Joe’s de-interlacer, and added more red noise.

Its alright, but not the most convincing in matching the existing over-gained up video footage that’s in the show already.

I’d be curious if people have presets for MB Looks or AE available for sharing. I’d happily share my attempts with others.
