  DV Quicktime export soft in middle !

  I just finished the online (8-bit uncompressed) for a very beautifully shot PBS documentary, and exported it two ways: 8-bit uncompressed, and NTSC DV.

  On the DV file, in the middle of the frame, during the credit scroll, we noticed softness. A line of type looks fine top and bottom, but the font softens and double-images a bit, when it hits the middle. This is a VERY subtle effect, and I don’t notice it anywhere else. The scroll was done in After Effects, and looks fine in the original and the 8-bit uncompressed export.

  I’m monitoring this via Kona LHe to a Sony 19″ component monitor, in component setting. When I tried to export a still frame to check this, the typeface looked bad everywhere due, I suppose, to field rendering.

  Why would a DV Quicktime have different quality in different parts of the frame? Or is it somewhere else in the chain?

  Good idea (if I had one), but I really don’t think it’s the monitor; the same scene on the same monitor is pin-sharp when rendered 8-bit uncompressed.
