Prepping FCP timeline for Color
Posted by Nathan Shuppert on December 17, 2007 at 8:59 pmHowdy folks,
Would someone be so kind as to post links to threads that detail the best way to prep your FCP timeline for Color?
I’ve searched and haven’t really found anything.
Thanks!

Honestly, that’s my next tutorial for the Cow. Might get to it tonight.
Essentially any Basic Motion (Scale / Position, Crop, etc..), Speed Changes, Still Images, Filters and third party transitions need to be removed from the timeline before you send it over.
The easiest way to do this is to Duplicate your finished timeline.
Anything with a Speed Change, Export that clip as a Self Contained movie and edit it back into the duplicated timeline.
Any Stills that you want to grade in Color, export those as self contained movies and edit those back into the timeline.
Then Select All in the duplicated Timeline and do a “Remove Attributes” so you end up with all your shots full screen with no effects and no filters.
Send to Color that timeline.
After you grade and send the timeline back to FCP. Once again Duplicate THAT timeline.
Now open that final timeline AND your original completed timeline.
Copy and Paste Attributes from the original timeline to your final color graded timeline.

December 17, 2007 at 11:05 pmThanks a bunch Walter! I just finished your DVD this morning and wanted to dive right in. Then I realized that I would have to deconstruct my timeline. Although I have no speed changes I suppose I’ll also have to remove all transitions (dissolves/wipes, etc.) and will have to make sure those clips have handles. Am I right about that? Seems like after removing this and that, I’ll have to do a bunch of replacing…but given the power of Color, it’ll be well worth it. Kudos to you and the COW folks for a great tutorial DVD. And keep us posted on any new tips and tricks that can be used in Color.

Nope. Transitions can stay so long as they are standard FCP transitions. Any third party transitions have to go.
