Downconverting HDV to SD – interlacing issues
Hello,
I am editing HDV footage on an hdv sequence and then pasting it onto a sd ntsc sequence. I notice that there is a lot of jitter on movement and slow mo’s. Now I know that adding a
de-interlace flicker will help resolve this, but how can I avoid having to apply a filter and render out each time, or is that just the name of the game?The HDV sequence is upper field dominant and the sd is lower field. It doesn’t appear to
be the issue, but I may be wrong. Should I set my sequence to no fields?Anyone have useful hints when working with HDV footage that is destined for sd broadcast…

The slo mo shots in the upper sequence need to be made into a QT file in the same codec and then drop the Qt on top of the original shot. When you copy into the lower field sequence, FCP 6 will correctly apply the shift fields filter.
Shift fields stuffs slo mo shots up by applying itself before the slo mo render which makes field blending wrong. I just did this in reverse with DV lower field slo mos into an uncompressed SD (PAL). This fixed that problem

Off course this is a big issue. Whenever you put footage with a certain field order in a sequence with the opposite field order YOU MUST SET A SHIFT FIELDS FILTER. In fact this is the only reason of the existence of this filter.
Apart there is other isue with the Speed-frame blending. FC renders wrong. The solution, nest the clip with the Shift fields filter and then apply the speed change.

forgive me if I’m stating the obvious, but your SD sequence will only be Lower First if it’s DV. If you’re prepping for broadcast, are you really delivering DV? If not SD uncompressed should be upper first AFAIK…

For PAL yes. For NTSC, no that’s Lower Field First.
And yes, DV is a deliverable for broadcast depending on the network. I’m cutting a DV project right now for a major national network.

be the issue, but I may be wrong. Should I set my sequence to no fields?”This is completely the issue. FCP does not do the greatest job of reversing the fields. Shift Fields is the filter that FCP should actually automatically apply when you place the HD material into an SD timeline. But you’re reversing the fields and scaling the video down. Two things FCP does not do all that well.
No, do not set your Sequence to None for fields.
The best way to do this is via hardware like the AJA Kona series. These do the conversion in the hardware and do it pristinely. We do downconversion (and up-conversion) all the time with our Konas for broadcast projects.
