  Project with multicam 16:9 and 4:3 footage project – help

  Greetings Cow Sages.

  Workflow questions re: 16:9 and 4:3 footage. Questions re: how 4:3 was digitized, and letterboxing NOT matching up with 16:9 and 4:3 clips.

  The problem is When 16:9 ad 4:3 footage is brought into a 4:3 timeline (needing to render of course the 16:9 footage), I notice that the letterboxing is not matching up– meaning, the 4:3 footage has less black space above and below the image than the 16:9 footage. Another way to say this is that the 4:3 picture takes up more of the top and bottom of the frame.

  Digitizing issues/ review In Quicktime:

  2 cameras shot regular ntsc dv 4:3 footage
  this footage was digitized and given to me — and not digitized a regular dv ntsc. When I open this captured footage in QT this fotage is letterboxed. It is a wider QT– such as the anamorphic footage noted below.

  1 camera shot anamorphic. When I open the digitized footage in QT there is no letterbox, of course when broght into FCP, there is the standard letterboxing.

  I am just beginning this project, and want to start out on the easiest foot.

  1. Do I try and crop the 4:3 footage to match the letterboxing happening on the 16:9 footage?
  2. Do I insert a mask over the entire edit to cover up the difference?
  3. Should I be usng a 16:9 sequence or a 4:3 sequence?
  4. Should the 4:3 footage be redigitized as regular 4:3 with no letterboxing, and then should I select the anamorphic option in the browser for this footage before I lay it into the timeline?
  5. As this is a multicam edit, is there a specific workflow I shold consider when working with 4:3 and 16:9 footage? Specifically related to space issues with having to render the anamorphic footage.

  And finally, when thinking about the final product– DVD — if I work in a 4:3 timeline, but with anamorphic footage (which has been rendered) is there anything I should do differently when creating the dvd or will the anamporphic footage be “read” as 4:3?

  I think the easiest way is to drop everything in a 16×9 sequence. The 16 footage will fit and the 4×3 will be cropped if the aspect ratio is 1.
