Another HDV timecode anomaly that is frying our collective brains:

We have about 50 HDV rolls shot in the US on Canon HV10 and HV20 cameras at 50i frame rate. We are trying to capture at DVCPro HD resolution using the Sony HVR 1500 deck and AJA Kona 2 card with FCP 5.1.2. The timecode on the deck is quite normal, but the timecode in the log and capture window appears to be a 29.97 timecode with a semi colon before the last digits rather than a colon. In addition it is not a continuous timecode and appears to reset every time you stop and start the player. In addition to THAT, when we stop the player the timecode on player and FCP match, but when we press play on the deck the 29.97 timecode re-appears. We are controlling the deck through RS422 but the same happens when we try to control through Firewire – and we don’t have this problem with material shot on oour Z1 cameras.

Currently we are going through capture now, but if we ever have to recapture any of this footage it will be an eye matching nightmare. Are we missing something?

Incidentally we are running dual 2.5 Macs with 3 GB RAM but it is the same on eachof our machines.

    Any suggestions gratefully received!

    Thanks

Sorry one more anomaly to share: we are capture nowing the HDV tapes as one long clip and then splitting up the single file into 5 or 6 files to make it more manageable for the editors and less of a strain on our system. Certain of the tapes appear to capture fine but when the capture is finished, the browser in FCP only sees about 50 seconds of the one hour clip even though you can view the whole clip in Quicktime. When we re-import the clip into a new project it still only sees the same 50 seconds or so. However, when we make the clip offline and manually relink it to the Quicktime, FCP see the entire clip as it should.

Has anyone come across this before – in fact has anyone successfully conformed from HDV mini cams in a 50i environment? I think I must be missing something!
