lost reel nos
Ive just started redigitising an offline project at full HD Res and as FCP captures clips the reel number vanishes from the Browser – Any one know why this is? is it safe to carry on (Im on a tight deadline here!)
I need to put this into color to grade and back to FCP….Im scared!

Save your work.
The first thing to always try is to Quit FCP, Restart the Mac, Open your FCP project and try again.

A great way to do this is to use “FCP Rescue” a free Apple Script that will Trash the Preferences for you (and restore nearly all of your user settings afterward).
There are versions for FCP (Pro) & FCE (Express) and a new one for FCP 5.Download these free Apple Scripts at

Thanks – Trashing the prefs works but wont bring my reel nos back – THIS IS A REALLY SERIOUS BUG!!!!!!!!
I had an assistant digitising a project overnight (200+tapes) I have just had to start again.

are you digitizing to the Apple Intermediate codec? this codec will let you work faster with HDV material you capture via firewire, but you lose the original time code and reel information.
in essence it makes each capture a quicktime with no metadata.
it has become obsolete with the release of pro res

Did you get a warning about capturing drop frame material into non drop media or vice versa?

No – Its almost certainly a bug – I trashed the prefs and started again and all is fine -i just lost 8 hours work though!

Is it only the reel numbers or is it all logging info?
Reel numbers are easy to rename.

Total bummer.
I have seen this before, and it had to do with Drop and non drop timecodes and capturing of the wrong one. (I know, you are in the Land of PAL so that stuff doesn’t matter to you), but it got me thinking. Perhaps your assistant logged under the wrong Easy setup and when you went to capture, FCP got confused? Just a thought. Like I said, this bit me hard one time when capturing NDF DV, but it was logged using DF. I was never really sure what the hell was going on, but once I got all the timecode straightened out, the capture was successful (I had a copy of the project before capturing with all the timecode info in tact thankfully).
You said this was an online, how was the offline captured?
