Does anyone know if G5’s will ever be able to edit AVCHD?
Posted by Slim The barber on November 28, 2007 at 9:26 pmOr will it always be a format only supported by intel based computers?

November 28, 2007 at 11:19 pmIt will never be able to edit AVCHD. Apple won’t develop software for obsolete hardware.
All the best,
Tom

OBSOLETE! OBSOLETE! Hardly! Just because it won’t edit the new stuff doesn’t make it obsolete. OLDER, yes. But my Dual 2Ghz G5 is HARLY obsolete. I can edit uncompressed HD on it, DVCPRO HD…do ALL the things I need to do just fine. And I will be able to for a few more years yet…
Sheesh…

November 29, 2007 at 4:47 amI got the same set up. Dual 2.0 G5’s. It’s still under (extended) warranty and it’s already a dinosaur.

Sorry…I am having the opposite experience. My Dual 2.o is ZIPPY! Might be that I am currently working on OLD Avid Meridians on G4’s and running OS9, and Avid Adrenaline’s running on PCs…
But I also only work with DV and DVCPRO HD…and have no issues.

If it makes your point any stronger, as you know we have pretty much the same computer with a Kona LH in them, and I usually work in 8bit and even ProRes, and I have no complaints either. On the other desk I have a 2.4 MBP with a SATA 1tb RAID and it ain’t that much faster.
Have a wonderful day.

November 30, 2007 at 4:56 amI was being facetious. I’m very happy with my G5. I just got it on Craig’s List a few weeks ago. I was working on a G4 Powerbook so to me the Dual 2.0’s are fantastic. I’m not overly concerned with the AVCHD either. I was just wondering because I’m getting rid of my GL1’s and I did like the Panny’s 3 chip HD consumer cam. I’ll just go with something else-I don’t do enough video work anymore to justify 2 prosumer cameras. If I need something nice, I’ll just rent an HVX.

November 30, 2007 at 5:06 amI wasn’t slamming you Slim…I was BERATING Tom Wolsky for calling my precious G5 OBSOLETE!
I had to cover the poor thing’s ears when I read that. Don’t want to hurt his feelings…
Now my Rev A iMac…THAT is obsolete. Not good for really ANTYHING. And I DON’T CARE IF HE HEARS IT OR NOT. Yeah, you pal…Bondi thing in the corner…YOU ARE OBSOLETE. Make a good fish tank. Maybe monitor for my Hackintosh if I take off the plastic and do some rewiring.
