We just got an Xsan solution to our media storage problem and now I’m relabeling five plus Tera bytes of video. Some of these videos appears in many different projects so when I select “rename file to match clip” in FCP any project outside of the one I’m relabeling in gets its media knocked off line. How can I relabel media that is referenced by several different projects and not have clips go off line?

Uh oh…. someone’s in deep doo doo.

You can’t rename clips and expect them to stay on-line! Especially in a workgroup environment.

We have a sign posted in every edit room that reads: DO NOT RENAME YOUR CLIPS!!!

Your editors have been lazy using the file name in place of the “notes” column. I bet they used to work on Avids, didn’t they? With FCP, the filename IS the way that media is managed, so by changing the filename you are throwing a HUGE wrench into the media management system.

You need to sit down with your editing team and come up with a unified file naming scheme. You say you just got X-SAN… didn’t the installer explain all this?

We use a simple date, camera, load, show system: 1126A03-RW That’s all we have for a file name. Anyone changing these names is shown the door… seriously! If you don’t get a handle on media management, your SAN will quickly become totally useless, negating any investment you may have made.

By the way, there’s no way to disable this function… I’ve already asked. Best thing you can do is give your editors “read only” permissions from the volume where the clips live.

    Good luck.
