Currently we edit in DV and then out put to mpeg2 thru compressor then import to DVDSP to burn an SD DVD.

We are moving to HD (xdcam) and I am trying to get a better understanding of the workflow (and time increase) to get to the same result on an HD DVD (Blu-Ray).

From what I have discovered … it appears we would change to PRORES on import … edit… then what is the best way to move to the HD codec in compressor (I assume h.264) and how much time can I expect to render for a 1 hour production?

Is there any hardware acceleration for the h.264 render? besides purchasing a faster computer?

Once I have the H.264 stream does anyone have suggestions on a DVD authoring program for the HD format (Currently have DVDSP 4, however it seems there are some issues with DVDSP and HD authoring)

Thanks so much for your help.

Whatever format you edit in, export a Quicktime file of the same settings (either self-contained or not) and use Compressor to turn that into exactly lwhat you need to make a disc with.

    So for DVD, MPEG II.

For HD discs, well there’s not much to do there yet. DVD Studio Pro can technically author them, but I don’t know of any ways to burn them yet. As I understand it, using DVD SP and a stand-alone burner doesn’t quite work for some reason. From what I’ve heard, Adobe Encore is what people who are making Blu-Ray discs are using.

At any rate, you’ll need to find someone who’s successfully made a Blu-Ray or HD DVD disc and ask them exactly what format is best. The standards can accept different things so I’m guessing you’ll need someone with experience to tell you which is best. Try the forums for those programs.
