now it’s quiet I’m finally playing around with ProRes. It’s a exceptional looking codec. Almost ready to ditch DVCPRO-HD…

But we’re dropping frames. It only happens very intermittently, when it starts happening it happens more frequently, and it seems to happen less if I have nothing else running on my machine (email or itunes). It can’t be my array, I can do uncompressed HD on them without a hiccup. This is media that’s 1)been captured with Kona and 2) UC HD that’s been dropped into a ProRes sequence and rendered by FCP. And while turning off itunes *seems* to make the problem less frequent, I don’t want a codec that needs that many system resources.

    1080/23.98 ProRes (HQ)
    8 core/8GB
    FCP 6.0.2
    OS 10.4.11
    QT 7.3
    Kona 3
    G-Speed fiber array

IS your output set to 10bit?

ah, think i was typically in 8 bit. 10 bit seems more stable. i’ll run it for awhile. Is this a particular issue with ProRes?

Yeah, but I’ve never had problems with any other codec using 8/10 bit output, regardless of it’s codec bit depth. but if that’s the issue, then that’s an easy fix!

That’s never been the experience for me. If the codec is 8 or 10 bit and the output is set to something different, it usually doesn’t work too well.

Is there a definitive answer to what ProRes non-HQ is? Is it 8-bit or 10-bit?

Th whitepaper says they are both 10 bit. One is 220 Mbps, the other 145Mbps both 10 bit.

Its disturbing to me that apple allows you to set a prores capture for 8-bit.

I have that preset that came with fcp 6.

If its a 10-bit codec it should not offer it as an option, especially if it causes problems.

What do you mean Mr BorJis?

I think in this case it’s more of a Kona or operator setting than anything.
