I need to do an edit to tape with audio only and no video. There is closed captioning on the video track, so I must be sure that FCP doesn’t send any video signal to the deck.

I’m primarily an avid editor and FCP does not have audio/video assignments like the avid digital cut tool. Is there a similar function somewhere in FCP, so i can be sure no video signal goes out?

    Thanks for any help.

You need to make an Edit to Tape. Insert only audio.

Yes, on Edit to tape window in the bottom right corner you can control whether or not you send audio or video.

    What kind of deck?

    Thanks for the response jeremy.

    I’m going out to a Sony DVW-A500.

I figured out how to toggle off the video signal with the yellow film strip icon, but when i went to do my insert the tape started recording about three seconds after i told it to. (i said start at 59:50 and the deck started at 59:53.

Is there a timecode issue when you do an insert in FCP? Am I missing a TC setting?

    thanks.

Set you in point on the ETT window, and turn off the little tc button (it looks like a a little clock next to the filmstrip).

also – is there a difference between the mastering and editing toggle at the top of the window?

Do i need to be in a different one to insert edit?

    Thanks

    ETT = edit to tape.

to insert, set your in and out points in the edit to tape window and set an in on your timeline.

Turn off the video and select your audio channels.

    Turn off the tc clock.

Switch to editing as this will turn off other options so as not to mess this up. Make sure to choose print in to out in the master tab.

Then drag your sequence from the browser to the insert overlay on the ETT window.

I’m stumped. No mater what i do the recording starts about three seconds before my in-point. Could this be a deck issue?

    Shouldn’t be.

It’s hard to tell you how to ETT over the internet.

Make sure all your numbers line up and match.

Try toggling to Master to mode then turn off all the options in the mastering tab for leader and trailers. Just keep the print in to out option on.
