Music video in AE
Posted by Zvi Twersky on March 23, 2007 at 4:57 pmHow are music videos made? Would it be correct to create an entire music video in AE? Or should they be created in PPR and only the parts with effects in AE? (This would be a little confusing since about %60-%70 of music videos have special effects)
Thank you.

That depends on what you want your music video to look like. Different goals will favor different techniques.
For example, a music video could be shot entirely on a Sony Handycam and edited in iMovie if that’s the look you’re going for =) The video is there to add to the feel of the music (which should probably be the focus), if you want a homegrown cheap & dirty feel then the above technique sounds reasonable.
If you’re looking to stylize your music video or rely heavily on motion graphics or even if you just want to color correct the footage then After Effects can definitely be of help. I would stop short of saying that you’d want to create an entire music video in AE though.

March 25, 2007 at 12:49 amwell I make music videos for living, and it’s true what wuzelwazel said.. it all depens on what look you want to achieve..
last stuff I did was a simple video, shot on HD in a really nice location.. other than some simple CC to give it a deep blue hue I did nothing more… you can chack it out here ..
https://www.myspace.com/lance_sefiroth
just scroll a little down (about middle of the page) and you’ll see it.. (shut the music first)
that’s all in camera made, CCed in FCP (could have been Premiere Pro but this wad hd and I felt more comfortable with FCP) cut in FCP and Ta-Daa.. that’s it..
but that’s one way to do it..
I’m now working on two new things.. both will be done in AE only.. as they are really heavy on FX…
a friend of mine does everything in Fusion..
it is really a mater of what you’re comfortable with.. but for best results with DV footage I recommend AE as PP compresses hell out of footage when color correcting and making transitions..
give us some info as to what you want to achieve and some reference about what should it look like.. maybe we can help you more then..

March 25, 2007 at 12:57 amThanks for posting your site. I loved the clip!
Well, my question wasn’t for something I need to do now, it was more of a general question for future work. I was talking more about clips like seen a lot on MTV, with many effect in them. I’ll try to find an example and post it, but the idea is that some music clips have effects in them like crazy. (not just chrome keying stuff). So I was wondering if all that is done in AE or something.

March 25, 2007 at 1:24 amOk, here’s a clip. It’s not very difficult effects to do in AE but I was wondering if this kind of clip was done in AE: https://www.ifilm.com/video/2546683

April 1, 2007 at 2:41 amWell to be honest I think it’s even done in a more simple application than AE…
Could you do it in AE? Totally..
like, you could do things like this as an exercise after an month or two of learning it.. this is really easy.. and AE is exceptionally powerful program.. even some of the big scenes from movies like “The Constantine” and “Van Helsing” were made in it..
so yes it all doable in AE.
more questions? fire away..

From the FAQ:
Can I still use my toilet after installing TiSP?
Do we look stupid? Needless to say, the fiber optic cable that enables TiSP will not interfere with your toilet’s regular operations. For your own convenience, however, you may eventually wish to hire a professional contractor to help route the cable under, or through, the toilet seat to your TiSP wireless router. -
