FCP 4.5 vs 6 – Field order issue
We just upgraded two edit bays from 4.5 to 6. All projects are a progressive (vs interlace) pipeline. Media is captured as progressive images and mastered in progressive. We avoid field temporal shifts at all steps as projects are distributed to progressive mediums.
In the past we have setup FCP 4.5 sequence settings with field order set to “NONE,” which renders all effects, transitions, and time remaps as progressive frames (no field temporal shifts).
When opening v4.5 projects in v6, or creating new projects in 6, we are encountering a problem with the sequence setting “field order = NONE.”
In v6 field order = none is displaying only one field of the image. Please take a look at the following frame grabs. This project is in NTSC DV.

Please read this recent article. it explains that you have to interpret your footage to whatever your timeline is set to, no matter what the state of your native footage.

Hope FCS2.0.2 cure few things.
the problem of the interlacing is (IMHO) that there is not a proper field-order flag in QT.
Would be so difficult to put in the QT movies this information when exporting or capturing? Each application guess a field-order depending mostly of the codec is working with. The same do some video cards.
I think now FC is managing well this issue and on exporting must set a kind of flag because FC at least can interpret properly the field order of the stuff exported from FC.

I find that the field order is interpreted correctly, but with FCP6 you have to override what the field order really is of the clip. If you put an interlaced clip in a progressive timeline, the image goes soft and displays on field. If you change the field order of the clip to none (even though it is really interlaced) it displays appropriately from within FCP. It was not like this in earlier versions of FCP.
