Phase issue – Heeeeeelp!
Hi All,
I’ve been tearing my hair out on this for a couple of days now and did go through all of the posts on Soundtrack and FCP but haven’t found the answer yet so I hope you don’t mind my posting but I could sure use some advice.
I’m cutting a three-camera shoot in FCP Studio 2 where we had a professional sound person record two performers. One to the left channel, the other to the right. The sound person mentioned that I may have a phase issue because the performers were so close to each other and darned if I don’t and it’s driving me nuts! Singularly, each track sounds fantastic but together, they sound hollow and sort of echo-ish.
I tried to send the tracks from my multiclip to Soundtrack as a multi track project. Once inside Soundtrack, I choose one track, click the analyze tab, check the phase box and click the analyze button. Once it’s done analyzing, it finds that one track is out of phase so I click on it and hit the fix button. So far so good right but here’s where I get stuck. How do I get the track back into FCP and replace the bad track with the good?
I’ve tried saving it to the desktop but when I go back to FCP and try to import the new file, it won’t allow it to import. I get the “insufficient space” message.
Again, I’m doing this as a multi track project. I could also just send a single track to Soundtrack, analyze it and save it but again, how do I get the darned thing back in?

How about exporting an aif (48k 16bit) audio file from STP. Then import that aif file into FCP rather than the STP project file?

In sound post, this is very easy to fix and mix. Save yourself the agony and take the audio to a decent DAW/ mixer and they can mix between tracks as people are talking and fix phase issues by slipping tracks in sub frames.
Whilst you are editing, I suggest delinking the stereo and just splitting and pulling down the other channel when that mic is not needed.

Thanks Michael and Colin. I was able to export the phase corrected file from soundtrack in an aif form and then import it back into FCP and replace the bad track. (after using Phase>invert in soundtrack pro).
There were still some phasing issues though (so I’m not sure what the phase >invert actually did in Soundtrack) but I am alternately using key frames to pull the sound down when it bleeds into the non-speaking performer’s track and that is working really well!
