  • Folder with files disappeared?

Posted by Gary Alan on November 1, 2007 at 1:16 am

Any help is very much appreciated. I am working on a Mac Pro 3Ghz Quad with 2 GB RAM and FCP 5.1.4. All updated to current versions. Simple project with DV files, graphics, etc. Over the last few days I have been doing some File-Export-QT Conversion to QT files at H264 in FCP. Just a 10 second timeline duration. I must have done about 20 different renders and almost all of them played fine. There were about 4 files at different times where I went to Finder to play the QT file that I just made and Finder would not launch the file as usual. It actually crashed/closed the Finder everytime I tried to launch the same file. I couldn’t even delete the one corrupted file. I had to copy the good files to a new folder and delete the original folder with the one bad file.

A bigger problem showed up today. A whole folder full of media and FCP project files from months of hard work has disappeared. No one knows how this happened. I cannot find the folder anywhere on local dives or the server drives.

Has anyone else experienced this? Does anyone have any suggestions on recovering this folder and its files? They are not in the Trash and I am currently trying some recovery apps without much luck.

Do you have Disk Warrior? This sounds like a perfect case to run it on your media drives. In fact, you should have run it before you started copying things and deleting things.

I do not have DW. I asked the people at this facility if they have DW and they did not. I did not delete the folder. I am working on a different system than my own.

Thanx David. I will try and get DW.

BTW, this was a folder full of source files, fcp project files and graphics of a project from a previous editor that finished the project. They now wanted to make a couple of changes and redo the DVD. I am now told there are no other copies backed up. I have the IT guys trying to help. I gotta believe there is something on the server since everyone has public and private folders. I am also trying some Recover apps like Data Rescue II and File Salvage.

    Hi guys

We had this issue a few months ago and it is to do with the config of Intel MAC/finder and a san network, if you have folders created on a external drive and then you move files around or whatever you can get a massive issue, in our case we lost 1.5TB of stuff, apple are aware of this but wont do anything about it …. if you have a PPC this will (hopefully) be able to see your folder but my guess is it has gone, sorry

same here they were two incidents that happend to us, some of the media files that was ingested for a week had been gone for no reason at all, just simply disappear on the xsan volume. we have an xsan here full of intel machines from servers to editing stations, and it happen to us twice, i mean this should not be happening on a system, clients are haunting on us really. why their months of work just suddenly been gone, i’ve searched different forums already and boy and no luck at all in finding a solution or even a steps on avoiding that it will not happen again. I hope someone out there can help us or even tells us whats going on.

we’ve tried contacting apple but i guess they dont know how to fix it.im guessing were on our own.

    Hi Gary,

I am working with a client with a very similar problem.
    Questions:

    a) Were your autosave files for this project still there after the others went missing?

    b) Did you have any luck with Data Rescue II or File Salvage? If so, would you elaborate?

    c) Have you run DiskWarrior on the external drives, and if so, did that help?

If possible, please email me back your reply also at TheMacTechGuy at gmail dot com.

    Thanks.
    Larry
