I am a user of combustion but i try to learn AE. In combustion i use many time the “selection tool” to isolate a region of the footage where i want to apply in affect (like make many key selection in different part of a difficult subject). Is this feature exist in AE? It is like the seclection tool in photoshop.

To apply an effect to a selection tool draw a mask in the shape of the area you want affected, on the layer or on an adjustment layer. You can also use Luma Mattes as in this nifty project by Andrew:

But a mask will also “mask” the other area of the footage? no? Or their is a trick i don’t understand.

My fault, I should have told you to Duplicate the layer (Ctrl D) then mask that layer.
