Untitled Project – aaarrrrggghhhh!
Is there any settings (i have looked but can’t find one) that let me stop FCP from opening up an empty project every time i start up?
I just want the software to start, then let me decide what i want to do.
Is it too much to ask not to have untitled projects open up or open the last project, etc.
The really annoying this is that i am sure it used to work how i wanted, but after a preference trashing, i can’t remember how to do this!!
please help a senile old editor retain some semblance of sanity and dignity.

hmmm- perhaps i gave less info than i should.
I have been all the way through all the preference options, and there is nothing (at least to my eyes) which offers the option of not opening up an untitled empty project when first starting FCP. I’m not so dim as to just ask without first checking myself.
So if you do know the answer Steve, please let me know – cos i’ve already looked (several times).

On that page there is the option to stop opening the last project (which i knew about). There appears to be nothing that stops the empty project from opening up….and its that that i am really bugged about!

What do you want it to do?
1-Open to PREVIOUS project?
2-Open to NEW (untitled) project?
3-Open to a hierarchy of folders (like Avid)?
If its “3” then I solve this by going FIRST to my FCP Projects folder(s) and clicking directly on the project I want to open.

1&2 – definitely not!
3 – so long since i used Avid i cannot remember what it did.I am convincd that up until i had to trash the preferences, i had it working how i wanted. Which is to start up from Dock, and not to open anything but simply to wait until i went to the file menu and either opened a project or created a new one. Its entirely possible that i am just imagining the whole thing!

I think THAT is what started this whole thing.

If you figure it out, please post it here. I’ve spent way too much time trying to get FCP to do the same thing you are–open the program only, not the program and a blank project.
Right now I just open FCP, Command+W to close the new project, Command+O to open the project I want. It’s fast enough, I guess, but still an extra step I could do without.

FCP is always going to open a project b/c it assumes you are opening the program to do some editing. If you have it set to not open the most recent project, it’ll default to a blank project. That’s the two options as it is only a checkbox feauture. If you want to open a specific project from the get go, just navigate to that porject in the finder and open it from there.
