    hello cow-nselors-

looking into getting new drives for my SATA RAID and i’m considering the seagate 750Gs. i have the seagate 500Gs and they have worked well but they’re getting pretty tired.

i did a search, but there was only a year+ old thread saying there were some issues but nothing after that.

if you were me, would you go with the 750s or is there any reason not too or a better option?

thanks for your help and input,

    glory to the cow,

    -eric

Our two main SATA arrays are running 1TB Hitachi drives. We haven’t had any issues in about three months now of continuous use.

Might as well go for the maximum storage if you’re upgrading.

don’t know where you are buying the drives from but always check out mwave.com for raw drives, they always seem to have the best prices.

Sorry this doesn’t answer your question.

Here’s a one year old review of Seagate with comparisons:

WOW! i didn’t expect WD to rate so well and hitachi certainly came out gangbusters. this really helps in making my decision before the money goes away.

thank you all for your input, as usual the cow comes to the rescue before there’s any real trouble.

    thank you again,

Right now, pricing for the 500GB’s are about at the lowest (per GB), but the 750GB’s are only a little more. 1TB drives are still a little on the expensive side.

I have both Seagate and WD 750GB drives, and I like the WD’s better because they run a little cooler and faster. They also got good reviews on NewEgg.

I’ve been using 500GB WD drives in an 8 drive RAID for about a year. 1 drive died last month. All I had to do was plug the serial # of the dead drive & my return shipping info into the support page on their website, print out an RMA shipping label, pack up the drive & mail it in. The replacement showed up something like a week later. You can do the same over the phone. With warrantee service like that, I wouldn’t think twice about buying another WD drive.

With Hitachi hard drives, all you have to do is click your heels together three times and repeat, “there’s no drive like Hitachi, there’s no drive like Hitachi,” and a new drive appears under your pillow the next morning when you awake.

I’m not alone now. There is another that believes in the disk fairy.

    Eric,

Your original post asked about Seagate drives. I ordered my newest Mac with 4 750 gig drives and Apple chose to install Seagates. Initially I was a bit miffed because I thought it would come with Hitachi drives, but so far the Seagates have been working fine. One is the startup/app. drive and I have the other 3 raided together in RAID 0. So far so good. I bought the new Mac Pro in the early spring and it’s on for several hours a day.

having a disk fairy is a pretty good warranty!

thank you to all for the input and the humor is always appreciated!
