October 23, 2007 at 6:25 pmNope. Sorry. Apple does a lot to ensure that you can’t.
Now, I know some VERY SMART GUYS swapped out the procesors on a MacPro, but that took a bit of doing and knowhow.

October 23, 2007 at 6:45 pmHi Shane,
What I want is to upgrade the Graphic card of my old G5 (2x2Gb) to get a better GPU performance. I want to install the ATI 1900.
Can I keep the Radeon 9800 that I’ve got now together with the new one?
Do you know a more interesting Graphic card:
Can I have heating problem, taking in to account that I’ve got a BM installed too?
Thanks a lot for your advice,

October 23, 2007 at 6:54 pmThe x1900 will not work. That is a PCIe graphics card and you have an AGP graphics card slot. This will ONLY work in machines with PCIe slots, and ones with a double wide slot would be better. The only AGP card that I know of that would work has been discontinued…the Rage x800 XT (was it XT?). I can’t find them new anymore.
The only thing a graphics card will enhance is Motion, and rendering of FX Plug filters. That’s it.

October 24, 2007 at 12:18 amNew production runs of the Mac ATi X800XT were recently completed. You can find the X800XT for sale at various retailers such as OWC.

October 24, 2007 at 12:33 amIt’s the Radeon x800xt — or something very similar. This was out of production for a long time but seems to be on the market again. I just got one from B&H.

October 24, 2007 at 2:38 amI am SO confused by this whole video card thing…
I’m running a G5 2.0 with a 256MB ATI Radeon 9800 Pro Card.
I checked the link above for the RADEON X800 XT Mac Edition. From what I understand, it is also a 256MB card.
So my questions are:
1. On my system, what kind of performance improvements could I expect in Motion 3 [I’m running all the latest OS X & FCP software].2. Is it possible and/or advisable to upgrade the video card?
Thanks in advance.

October 24, 2007 at 3:27 amDon’t be confused. It’s pretty simple. The x800xt is a much better card. Go to barefeats.com and I think you’ll find some objective tests.
I have a g5, 2.0 ghz. Before I upgraded my card to the x800, it wouldn’t even let me open Color. Now it does. Motion does feel a lot faster, though I haven’t done enough Motion work to give you a precise idea of how much.
If you are not going to work much with Motion, Color, or the fxplug plug-ins in FCP, you don’t need the upgrade. But if you use these, it’s a good investment for sure.

It’s the Radeon x800;) I just ordered one yesterday from Club Mac. $304.61 shipped. They have them in stock. I think Otherworld may have them in stock, as well, but for around $20 more.
